Facade reno/rebuild - please help with colour and style!
The front deck/verandah that runs the length of the front of our early 90s house is rotting and requires almost complete replacement. We have already started the demolition so unfortunately I only have a few photos for reference. The deck was extended around the back of the house 15 years ago, and is still in good condition, so we are not wanting to change the design hugely as we don't want to replace the back section.
We are thinking to change the balustrade to straight cut top and bottom, with longer balusters that go from the top of the top rail to at least the bottom of the bottom rail (or perhaps slightly longer if that won't look funny?!)
Colour scheme I am looking at is woodland grey - I have trialed colorbond woodland grey and monument and WG tones nicely with the bricks. This would include window frames and gutter/fascia. Thinking maybe to do the base boards in monument though to 'ground' it as it is a darker tone? Or potentially do the base boards and house trim in woodland grey, then the balustrade in WG frame with stained timber balusters? Last couple of pics are my inspo. Not sure whether to incorporate beige/cream somewhere still, as the garage door will stay the same at this stage. Will paint the garage (shed) though.
Would really appreciate any feedback on these ideas! Just to add, I am not a fan of the wire/cable look, plus I like the better privacy afforded by using timber balusters.
Should also add that the budget is very tight! Thanks!

Comments (121)I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. Comments (46)The blue is awesome (grey is too trendy)! The reason it stands out to you is perhaps because it's the only real colour there. Bring in the blue in a window treatment, a small appliance that sits on the counter, a pretty tray or area rug. Also, it is more appealing often if there are more than 2 colours - so right now you have a white and blue colour scheme - bring in red or orange or fushia - something from the other side of the spectrum (like you did with the yellow flowers but in a more permanent way)!...See MoreHow to modernise the exterior?
Comments (13)With any post war house built in the 50's the connection from in to out is non existent. Depending on where living rooms are located i would take some of the fantastic windows out and replace them with French doors, or bi folding doors and connect the house to the site. The colour scheme from Karen is perfect to lift the kerb appeal and give it a modern twist. With land costing more than houses these days and the fact that you seem to have quite a big block, after looking at paint colours, opening up the living dining kitchen areas to the outside with a roofed area. Even combining a flat roofed carport which will widen the house to the street making it seem a bigger house, can carry the new look with say an enclosed section for garden equipment, to the opposite side to the house, and if you are lucky enough to have that near the living area it can be used as both car cover and outdoor living. I always think a good landscape architect is worth their weight in gold, to give you a landscape plan, to suit the soil type, your skills level and your preference in planting. Divide up the exterior space to provide outdoor rooms under a tree, paths that lead to some special spot for kids, maybe even a veggie patch with a chock run, and make sure that you use the entire yard, front and back by enclosing part of the front yard in fencing which suits the style of the house, while providing some planting to the street. If allowed a gate structure to blend in with the house, a dedicated pathway with planting each side to the front door, fantastic fencing and consider natural materials like a hand laid stone fence with timber or powder-coated aluminium inserts, to give this house an entry, not sure where the front door is now, so that is not a good look. Gardens always enhance a house, they are never a wasted effort, and if you are not gardeners, make sure the landscape architect knows that and he will be able to select low maintenance plants. Comments (41)The setting is quite tropical, so a darker scheme with white trims has such a tropical holiday feel. You may consider using a concrete face brick for the lower section. This will be modern, and eliminate the need for painting, while still creating contrast with the upper level. Try a colour for the main house like Resene Evolution, or Quarter Evolution, both would be perfect for your style of home. 3 years agoAgree with black bamboo, We recently replaced a balustrade with wire rope. So much better.
In terms of colour, i have and like woodland grey on my fascia and gutters. My house is bagged in Dulux barn floor, which is a greenish Grey. Our windows are suede nouveau which is a light cream, not too yellowish. This is an old colour so not sure if it is still around. But gives you idea.. (my deck has no railing as it under 1 m above grass.)

3 years agoThanks Kate. I’ve trialed both monument (left) and woodland grey (right) on some old posts - I’ll add a pic to show them against the bricks and the current window/trim colour which is a light beige/cream colour. It’s amazing how different colours look in different light/angles!

3 years agoI also liked your last example photo you could make it work for a single story, the photo shows a whole lot of stuff that clutters the look, your house runs beside the driveway so you won't have that problem
