Design Dilemma Kids Room Furniture

Help with nursery furniture set up!

Hi all!

I am preparing for baby #1 currently living in a rental( not the prettiest) but we got some great second hand timber furniture for the room but anyway we put it looks awkward!
Furniture is : crib, glider, shelf and change table. Unit at the back is air conditioning

The bookshelf is going to be used half for a closet (
Removing the top shelf and adding in a pole). Would love your suggestions! Sorry about the mess, it’s all baby storage!

You’ll want the chair where you can do an easy transfer to the cot. And a clear path to commando crawl out of the room so you don’t wake the baby. I’d take everything out of the room that’s not staying in there (for small creatures babies have a tonne of stuff) and then reevaluate the room.

I haven't got any helpful suggestions re layout etc...but just wanted to say, PLEASE make sure you attach that tall bookshelf to the wall - before you know it bubs will be crawling and pulling itself up on things or climbing and tall pieces of furniture can topple forwards - sadly it has happened before and been fatal :(

try Benjamin Moore Key Ivory West for the walls - it's a soft color and will brighten the space, but will work with other colors. Put a funky rug on the floor. Go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx or IKEA and get a comfy chair with a a small table next to it. If she has any artist friends at school, have her ask them to do an oil or watercolor of something she likes in a large canvas for over the bed (don't frame it). Replace those lights. Or, for over the bed, just print out a bunch of 5x7 photos of friends or whatever (black and white would make a statement) and arrange them in whatever frames you like. Going for neutral or soft colors will enable you to use accessories for color and change the look when it gets old.

I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested.

Bronan, if you are over 13 and under 21, then the possibilities are really fun with black wood furniture in a room that could be set up with a ballet barre, or used as a dance practice studio as well as a bedroom! Since the floors are dark, you will need to keep the walls light, Usually in a bedroom you start with the colors in your bedding. If you want a new look, perhaps you could start with a pretty floral like this, paint the wall where you will put the head of your bed a deep coral pink to match the bedding and all the other walls a pale pretty coral too. room a soft, soft pink, and hang soft pink drapery panels http://www.target.com/p/threshold-multi-floral-comforter-set/-/A-14982101#prodSlot=medium_1_13 The coral will pop with your black furniture better / a good one that makes your skin pretty in the light - this one for a headboard wall to test - http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6878-animated-coral/ this one for the other 3 walls . . a white with the same coral undertone - http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6609-touching-white/ If possible, you might hang drapery rods on the mirror wall, so you can hang (with this bedding) white drapery at both the window and on each end of the mirror - it will make it feel a lot softer in the room if you treat it like a window. You can follow watch for on sale drapery until you can get a lot that is the same. Put the rod at the same height over the mirror as it is over the window. You might paint an inspirational quote at the top of the mirror in the dark coral (using a stencil) so that you visually fill the space between the top of the mirror and the top of the window. You could get a sample size of pale green paint the color of the green in the bedding to paint an extra piece of furniture that you need that isn't quite right. A little desk or vanity, or even a round end table or a bench for the foot of your bed. Hope this looks like an interesting option to you. Later, you can go for graphic black and white bedding and put hot coral pillows on it with the same paint job and curtains and get a whole new look with just new bedding.

Sorry I am so late coming to your site - you are an inspiration to all, homeowners and advisers alike. For your planting advice, I suggest you call Merrifield Garden Center to see if they will come out your way. They currently have wonderful garden centers in Merrifield and Fairfax (both in Fairfax County) and a new one in Gainesville, but they may come further south to wherever you reside. (www.MerrifieldGardenCenter.com) Even if they don't send designers to your area, they are worth a trip to see their huge selection for a day of pleasure and inspiration, or to pick up some plants. I would add, put the cot against an internal, not an external wall. The external walls have too much temperature variation. Love your room with the beautiful tree outside.

congratulations...exciting times..as big reader says, get rid of everything that you won't use immediately...assuming limited storage in a rental perhaps the car seat and whatever the framework is can be stored under the cot...place a big sheet under the mattress to hang down and hide the storage...i would move the chair into the corner next to the window and add a small table (a plastic upside down toy box would suit) so you have somewhere to place a drink while you sit with your feet up...the furniture looks lovely so only needs a dust and wipe over and make sure handles are securely attached and clean and add fresh liners inside the drawers, absolutely attach the bookshelf to the wall (only needs small L shaped brackets from hardware store) choose some new bedding in your favourite colours (baby doesn't care as long as you're happy) and add some block out curtains and a lap rug

Why not put the chair in the living room? That’s where you’ll be feeding Bub the most, so you should have a nice comfy chair. As a mum of three,I’ve never understood the concept of having the most comfortable seat in the house in the nursery.

Congratulations!

Perhaps the simplest change, would be to swap the position of the cot with the chair and footstool, that way the chair can be better angled towards the centre of the room without sticking into the doorway, and if necessary, the footstool can be pushed out of the way against the wall under the window.

I start by changing the curtain rod so it extends across the whole room allowing you to hide the aircon when not in use hanging it higher if allowed. Then add some curtains to blockout light.. Talk to landlord they should approve if you agree to leave curtains behind. Then add canvas prints to wall to brighten up. Avoid a rug as it is a trip hazard at night when carrying Bub. Trust me on that.

I put a recliner in nursery so I could feed at night and only warm up a small room. My kids took ages to feed and I couldn’t do it in bed.
