I'am not an engineer but having had these fires I would think that the wall would need to reinforced with fireproof material as will the base, so the the fireplace could be wall mounted, brick or concrete wall comes to mind, good luck

i think this could easily be achieved by an enthusiastic carpenter using a custom made steel bracket incorporated inside the wall ie like a steel framed house the support structure is behind the wall lining and under the fire and the timber is just decorative

Hi Siriuskey, thanks for your reply. As long as we maintain the required clearances for the specific fireplace we purchase then we don’t have to use fireproof materials for the walls, just directly below the unit and roughly 300-400mm either side from memory.

Thanks for your reply oklouise, I was thinking similar but I really don’t want to have to pull plaster off of the wall as we have only just finished building the house. I was thinking that the section directly under the fire could be made out of a steel frame then batten screwed/coach bolted to the studs through the plaster, then as you say it could then be ‘clad’ with timber so it matches the floating tv unit joined to it.
The big question is whether this would put too much lateral force onto the studs?

Just guessing but that 300 would apply to the rear of the heater as well, so that plus the depth of the heater would change the look that you have shown, maybe 1m depth or more from the wall. Seeing that it's wood fired it would make it easier to build the fire section to the floor which would support the fire and give you wood storage space underneath. A gas fire would be a lot easier to achieve the look you are after but once again depends on the depth of the fire

Hi bhp, spoke to my furniture maker / joiner son about your dilemma and he was pretty adamant that this would not be an easy project. It would require a design by a structural engineer, definitely steel reinforcing behind and underneath and be, in his opinion, “ultra expensive”. The weight is one factor, but the depth required is, he said, the more prohibitive issue. Cool as the idea is, he who is pretty innovative and works on high end projects, wasn’t very encouraging

The perfect wood fire place as a friend suggested is the hanging black disc shaped fireplace you would still need to allow space around it not to mention the cost. You can achieve anything with great design and money

i don't understand all the concern..(obviously won't be cheap or easy and probably needs an engineer to design the frame) but the firebox probably weighs no more than 200kg (less than a bathtub full of water and a bather) and the flue is suspended from the ceiling or a power flue can be directed through the wall or floor ..the challenge will be finding the most suitable brand and model (preferably zero clearance) and keen tradesman to organise the steel frame as the timber shelves are only decorative not structural ...we have a 250kg corten steel courtyard gate that is only suspended from steel hinges and they not only hold the weight above the ground the door also has to move...consult the manufacturers who should be able to give more specific advice

Minimum clearance behind the unit is 100mm with the appropriate metal shielding, so all up the bench it sits on can be as little as 550mm deep, plus the firebox only weighs 170kg.
As the end of the bench it’s going to sit on is at the corner of the room, there will be the option to fix the steel frame it sits on to both walls which should add significant strength to it, and if worse comes to worse we could always add a supporting leg or two under the cabinet.

Siriuskey, We don’t have gas where we’ve built so that’s not an option for us, and as cool as the suspended Oblica fires are it wouldn’t suit our coastal weatherboard home at all.

I might contact a local Joiner to see what they think, if it’s a no we might just have to get the optional steel bench (with legs) then Mount the floating entertainment cabinet beside it.

It’s the fire proofing I’m most concerned about with the fireplace sitting on timber.

Ok, as mentioned earlier the fire would be sitting on top of non combustible material of the required thickness, most likely compressed cement sheet 20mm thick, with some sort of natural stone laid over it so as that you couldn’t see the cement sheet.

I'd suspect the best and easiest way would be to go for a heavy 6-8mm-wall pipe supported at the ceiling level , and have the fire welded to that -- in other words , a truly hanging fire . You'd probably want the updraught pipe surrounded with stainless or similar grating too .

The way you are doing it ( with lighter weight flue , and suspending it from a wall ) you will need solid supports THAT DON"T TRANSFER HEAT , a way of insulating the bookcase or wood cabinet , and fire rated protection on the walls behind it ( fire retardant probably wouldn't meet code ) . These fires get hot -- I've seen them glow red hot and get almost translucent ) so you'd have to make sure nothing within a metre or even more , is likely to get too hot .

Personally I think the Oblica fire would fit into any style room, a bit like the Scandi homes which are beautiful., But then it is expensive. You need to have disccusions with the supplier and manufacturer they should be able to steer you in the right direction with what and how it can be done and even have installers/engineers on their books, good luck
