HELP! I need help updating the look of our tired old unit

Help, we are renovating this old 80's unit, we have gutted it out inside but need help on the outside.

We are replacing the guttering and garage doors, so I thought that they could be the same colour, the problem is the windows that are white. We will replace the external blinds and paint the fascia, eaves, downpipes and railing any colour and we will be rendering the front fence which will tone things down. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of either Woodland grey or Ironstone for the panel door, guttering, railing, external blinds and front doors, white fascia and eaves, then once they are done decide on the colour of the front rendered fence. Do you have any opinions besides removing the old canvas carport?

your ideas sound excellent but i would paint the front door white to highlight the narrow entry , use black and white striped awnings, black (Monument?) for garage door, steel wall, fence, guttering and capping stone on front fence but i would not render any bricks unless they're too damaged to repair (pressure wash all bricks, driveway and concrete paths) and maybe time to replace the poplars? with some fresh landscaping...subject to local climate consider Japanese Maple or similar small trees to shade the front porches and consider a traditional low hedge behind the front fence

I'm thinking on similar lines to oklouise , with a couple of differences . The front fence looks to be similar brick , but not identical , but the reason you notice that is because the house is almost all white trim , and the fence has a black cap . So I'd do that cap in white , and thats got that a bit more in tune .

The iron railings , the white windows , the awnings , the squared hedge are all old-fashioned , but thats what you have . I'd change the awnings , paint the door white , get rid of the canvas carport . But rather than doing the garage in charcoal , I'd try and get a similar orangey red to the brick ( get several test pots ) . Its not going to be perfect , but neither is black or charcoal . To a certain degree , replacing the garage cladding with cedar stained natural wood in theory is even better , but I'm worried it may look too cliched .

The gardens are okay , of course theres heaps you could do but theres nothing jarring there , but the final thing I'd mention is the right side fence . I'm not a fan of white fences , but with the reddish brick , the brown roof and all the white trim , I wouldn't try and bring in charcoal ( monument ) or similar , I would keep away from almost every other colour , so by a process of deduction , it would be white . Not even cream or beige or surfmist or grey . White haha .

I think the first layout is fine. You might want to consider moving the door for the storage room of the master bedroom so that it opens into the hall. That way the kids can use it for overflow storage. Also, that hallway is big enough that I think it could hold a large armour, providing more closet space. (There's no need to sleep in the same room as your clothes, so long as they're not too far off.) Also, don't forget that while the drawing shows kids in double beds, this need not be the case, so there will be more room for furniture (dressers or whatever) in their rooms. Finally, that step to bedroom 4 will not be odd at all. I've seen it in other homes. It looks clumsy in the drawing but it isn't. What you'll see when you come up the stairs is a bedroom door on a slight diagonal. It's only an odd jagged step if you walk like a robot, in straight lines along the wall, which is what your eye is doing on the drawing but you won't do in real life.

If you are planning on having this built you need to discuss it with the carpenter and have him draw up plans. If you are looking for premade cabinetry it is doubtful you will find something that will accommodate the pole. We would be able to make further suggestions once you have a plan for the cabinet as far as storage and design. From what you are looking for I suggest a full wall built in cabinet customized for your needs.

I agree with Diane's ideas! Grey is a nice color. The only thought I had on having a corner sink cabinet, you may not be happy with it in the end. You have a little corner, and the sink may be too small for you in the end along with not having any storage space. If you can't find any curtains that you love, try a cheap roller blind for now. It will give you a visual look and an idea if you want to stay with a curtain or going a bit modern with a patterned blind or even a roman type shade. It could turn the cozy look into a clean modern look. Framed mirrors are expensive. Call a glass company in your area and have them give you a price on mirrors. It might be quite nice to take the mirror down, and replace the wall there with a complete wall mirror to fit, stopping the mirror at the vanity, and continuing the mirror across the vanity between the sink and window. It will make your bathroom feel much bigger, even though you wont be able to see in the mirror over the sink. Close up the vanity doors with new door. Use props first (white poster to cover up the doors) etc. before you buy anything! Stick on tiles are a great idea! They clean nicely and look great. Although I wouldn't go with the wood look. Your bathtub tiles are old fashioned, go with a stick on floor tile that is easy to look at, try to get samples first. Remember Gray is a sleek clean modern color. It is not a cozy country color. If you don't like the grey in the end, maybe a real pale blue or butter yellow (that would be more of the cozy cottage look).

I agree that you should take down the trellis but be aware that you'll probably need to extend your decking rail along that side in order to enclose the deck for building code purposes. If that's more of an expense than you're willing to incur right now, consider at least taking it down to the same height as the rest of your deck and putting a top railing across it. You could then put in some foundation plantings that would climb up and cover the fact that it runs in a different direction than the front of your deck. If I'm looking at it correctly, your gate gives you access to your front door from your drive way. Am I right? In that case, I think your gate should stay where it is. I agree with flair lighting that a new light is in order over your entry. If you like the idea of a motion light, they make decorative outdoor fixtures with motion lights built in. Your fence would definitely look nice painted a lighter color. Right now, as flair said, it's a bit unwelcoming. If you're painting your metal roof, take your house and trim colors from there to coordinate. You could definitely paint your scalloped trim a different color than the house. Matching it to whatever trim color you choose would look great. Do you use the steps from your deck to access your yard? If not, I would consider removing them and closing in that portion of the deck as well. If you do use them, I would add a hand rail for safety purposes. Love oklouise’s ideas, I would remove large conifer at front gate as this is dating the property, love the idea of black and white blinds,replant to a more modern look, add a few gorgeous trees for summer and autumn colour... could look gorgeous.
