how big is your block of land? you need to first decide the number size and type of tree you want to suit the available space and your local environment.. keeping in mind that mature height width and root systems can be a problem and you would only need a few small trees for the average residential block but, once you decide on the suitable tree (or shrubs) it's quite easy to grow many varieties from seeds, cuttings or tube stock as long as you keep watering and repotting small plants into larger pots as they grow ... there's lots of published information for best techniques eg square and ribbed pots help avoid root bound plants that don't survive well in the ground... we also made time to plan the landscaping, driveways, garden beds and prepared soil ready for the new garden by digging in compost and collecting all discarded building materials and encouraging builders to avoid dumping cement, chemicals and paints in the garden and we had some surprisingly good results by collecting piles of rubble that we later covered in compost and topsoil to create well drained raised beds for our new gardens

Talk to a supplier. They sell them at various ages or height. Tube stock will catch up to 2m specimens within around 4 years I think is the guide.

It depends on the trees really and how much root disturbance they will suffer while building. Certainly plant trees that are away from the house now. perhaps if you want fruit trees plan an orchard away from the house site and plant it now as it can take 5 years before you get some fruit. You could have faster trees closer to the house and plant later. But you can buy advanced trees. Perhaps start by integrating the landscape design into the house design phase and see what you come up with? Depends what trees you like. I think designing the garden and house together can really help you figure out these sorts of things and decide what to do when. I have planted birch trees that grow fast from bare root saplings that I mail ordered. I payed $5 each, they are now less than a year later the size that would have cost $100 each. so it also depends on budget and savings. I have also planted garden around the house that is... shall we say temporary, that is they can handle being uprooted and moved later. things like bulbs and tropicals like ginger and tumeric and canna. even the jasmine. some plants can handle being cut back and trashed and will just come back, we demolished a set of stairs on top of the garden and its all come back. I have a lot of foliage plants grown from cutting, stuff that spreads and divides. they don't mind being disturbed and in fact thrive being occasionally dug up and divided. As the reno unfolds the garden can evolve. I have a lot of bromeliads and shallow rooted plants like frangipani that can be moved too. You can also bury trees in large grow bags or pots so they are flush with the ground but can be moved as needed.

If you already have a garden it can be good to take cuttings or divisions and grow them in pots ready to move. You can sometimes pull a whole heap out but it not really look like anythings missing.

I also use a plant call dog-gone a lot. Its a cheapy and its shallow rooted and easy to pull out whenever needed. It has little lavender like flowers and I've used it like a living mulch and ground cover while the fancier stuff grows protected underneath It literally grows and falls to one side and any bends or 'elbows' grow roots and can be planted. so literally any 10cm piece can be lightly tucked into the ground and grow. its been great to get the garden beds established and map it all out and protect the saplings from the hot sun.

I think magnolia are more susceptible to root disturbance than birches. All those trees can be bought mature and decent sized though so you might want to wait and not have to worry about them while you build. You should be able to buy them online and bare rooted and have them delivered mid-winter. winter is the time to buy those sorts of trees, they are dormant and can handle the transit and are cheaper without the pot and soil. You could go ahead with the nature strip but consider if you will need space for work vehicles or skips and materials being delivered. Even if you buy your birches small they are quick to grow an would be full sized within 3 years. mine have grown to a metre in less than a year. they respond to water so if you water them well in the growing season they will shoot up. mine like worm wee too.
