I know with some of my clients that the quirky, unusual features of their new homes are often initially hated until they appreciate that they are actually part of the character, charm and uniqueness of their home. With any new house, it is always best to live with it for a while to really decide if you hate it, before spending money on removing it.
Are they timber? Or tiles that look like timber? If timber I would consider staining them with a grey wood stain to a similar tone to the surrounding tile if you want to make them disappear. If they are tile then I would be looking at some of the tile paints that are available and try and match the grey tile colour.
However, if it was my bathroom I would live with them as they provide an interesting contrast to all of the grey tiles, and I would fill them up with glorious Murano glass to add colour and interest to a very grey bathroom.
Best of luck with your considerations,

I agree with removing the lighting, I would also tile over the existing with smaller tiles in a lighter grey in a Herringbone pattern.. The top recess is a great place for plants as shown and the lower for shampoo and even some reading material for a long soak. The long one on the side of the bath, candles timber carvings or large shells etc, things that won't shatter and break on the tiled floor. And no yellow towels, white would be more stylish
