We have purchased an old home built in the 80’s near the beach. It is very dark through but has solar panels on the roof, so don’t think I can get a skylight in. Looking for ideas to update the house but not overcapitalise.
The kitchen shows you how adding in some white plaster makes a diff. I would do that to the low ceiling near your wood fire adding infill panels. Add light curtains and maybe jute rugs to floors. Replace kitchen bench and sand and re-coat kitchen cabinets. Change all light globes to daylight globes, keep furniture light. Add plaster to selective walls like in master picture.
If the kitchen cupboards are in decent condition keep them and paint them a lighter colour. much cheaper than replacing. with the lounge or open area pick 1 wall maybe the half wall going up to the roof and gyprock over the top then paint. same with the white in the bedroom continue it around the side where the aircon and seats are. it'll keep most of the original character of the house but lighten sections so it's not so dark. use mirrors or wall lights on the other sides. Bright tall floor lamps
