I think you misunderstand what a 4x4 is about.

You don't need a 4x4 for a steep driveway in the suburbs.

A steep driveway, a mile long made of dirt with ruts on acreage, sure. You'd need the training to drive it too. It's not as simple as swapping a 2WD for a 4WD.

The slope in the photograph looks less than our driveway.

Is it the finished slope or is it simply how the machinery on site has left it? Do you have a site plan which shows the intended slope? The elevation you have posted doesn't seem to show much and doesn't enlarge enough to see clearly.

Do you have an actual site plan. This would show how long your actual driveway will be and the gradient of the slope.

I think you are looking at a slope that is for vehicles and delivery of materials.

Look at your plans, ask the builder.

To work out slope you need the distance and the height change from property boundary. A drop of 1 m in 4 m of horizontal travel is 25 % which is typical max permitted for resi driveway but some areas allow more, Looks like you are around 1.5 drop so If 6 m setback then you are at this max. Ideally 1 in 5 20% or flatter is better.

I'd actually be concerned , because even though your section slopes , it looks like the architect or draughtsperson has your garage set at a lower level compared to the rest of your house .

My concern is that if she has missed something this obvious , what else has she stuffed up ? Wonder if that will get a bite haha ?

I think you are right to be concerned but the slope looks like it might be ok (ps as a back up I have a 4wd and you don’t need training to drive them). Has the crossover between the road and your property been finished? Is it sloped or flat? I’d be concerned on the transition ie will the slope be a smooth gradient all along. A bump where the crossover meets your driveway can cause the bottom of the car to drag and scratch.

Thank you for the pic. I’m not an expert in driveways but am aware of others having problems with the underneath of their cars. It’s hard to tell from the pic but it looks like the crossover slopes up slightly to your property. Then you’ll be adding a downwards driveway which does create the potential for a hump at the transitional point. Worth a conversation with your builder or whoever designed the driveway, and also worth a drive around your neighbourhood to see if anyone else has had the same problem. Good luck.

Your plans may already have but make sure your have a drain at the front of your garage so water doesn’t run down the slope and under the garage door.

@bigreader.. yes there is a big drain infront of the garage.

Have you had someone check the depth that the foundations were dug down to ?

And likewise , has the crossover ( entrance ) been checked , and are you allowed to alter it -- yes , I know , more expense , but if that was angled down from the street too , it would be 20 degree slope instead of 30 deg .

The design shows a terrace approx 30cm higher than the garage door bottom , but in your last photo , even that looks to be 60cm below the street level ?

While they'll all deny it , it looks to me like someone has measured something incorrectly somewhere .

I was alluding to the people you sometimes hear about with an over-reliance on what the 4WD can do versus what they as a driver can do who find themselves needing rescuing, though not usually from a driveway, but then a driveway doesn't usually need a 4WD. Some people acquaint themselves with a new car sensibly, and some treat it like the different features effortlessly give them a new super-power, the idea that a new car could fix something about a driveway made me think of the latter.

I'll add, if the builder were to build you something that forces you to buy a new car that's not normal. I'd be annoyed enough if the fridge or washing machine didn't fit, but a car!

Good question. You'd hope there'd be a standard for that. We had one car that was very prone to that and we've been over specific troublesome bumps on private driveways and public carparks which affected cars that were fine everywhere else.

Some pics of where the crossover meets the road at the kerb from different angles would be useful. And then where the crossover joins the rest and starts changing angle, but that has not been poured yet, right? Will it be reinforced? Sorry to introduce yet another thought, but it's one we had fun with, so it's good to be able to help others avoid that. Or maybe they are reinforced as standard these days or in your jurisdiction? Never ceases to amaze me how things vary.

So it's a strip drain all along in front of the garage? That's good, but I have heard of the occasional problem even with a drain. Getting back to Pottsy's comment, I remember there used to be a requirement for the garage to be a step below the house to make sure if the garage flooded it wouldn't go in the house, but on the other hand more recent rules seem to encourage less steps between for accessibility purposes, so I'm not sure what the situation is in your jurisdiction, might be worth checking?

Looking at your pictures again, make sure you get plenty of drainage all round the house. Our builder did the bare minimum and we had to add more later and I know of people who have experienced the same. It's cheaper/easier to do at the time of the build, and a real nuisance to do when new garden beds get flooded.

What's that saying, "measure twice, do once"?

Our plan showed a certain number of steps from the highest side of the house to ground level and when built it was something different. Now I think about it the previous house had a reduced number of steps. In both cases it led to other minor consequences. I wonder how common is that?

Ask the builder/designer to confirm the drive meets this standard. Paying attention to the transition grades at each end including drainage design and finished level at new drive. Min internal clearance of garage required is 2.1m.
