Keep or knock down old brick hearth?

Recently purchased an old art deco era house in Melbourne's northern suburbs. While i love art deco style, this kitchen is pretty unpractical and needs a complete re-do. It has this old tiled brick hearth where the previous owners have inserted a gas stove. I'm wondering if i should just knock the whole thing out (which i image could be expensive and require a structural engineer) or try to incorporate it somehow into the new kitchen. Would love to see photos if anyone has seen where this has been done successfully.
