An Apartment with Character - Before/After

Our client asked for a low-maintenance, high-end look that was clutter-free but oozed personality. It had to have good sightlines (things like pendants were a no-go) and keep the thoroughfares open and she also wanted mustard thrown into the space. Initially, we were only hired to do the living and the dining areas, but this grew throughout the project. She didn’t want new paint or light fittings but did want new flooring throughout.

Our starting point was the sofa which is the only thing the clients purchased prior to engaging us, however everything else we started from scratch. The only other items they bought with them were clothes and toiletries so every piece of furniture and decor was brand new. We were also asked to steer clear of sentimental items like family photos, but we managed to add them in as a surprise aswell.

We started transforming the space by selecting custom-made window treatments, which would create a softness to the space as well as injecting natural light. Once we had chosen the fabric and the flooring, we set out to work on the custom entertainment unit.

Our client’s husband was away at work, and the project took place just as Perth went into the first lockdown, so he didn’t get much input however, we knew that we needed to give it a masculine energy, as well as some of the more feminine choices and this, is the look we came up with. We had our cabinet maker source the Marri and custom-made the cabinets and outdoor kitchen keeping the colours dark to balance the sofa.

He also adjusted some of the other elements like the study desk to add more storage. From there, we found elements that felt natural, a little quirky, and not mainstream, such as the peacock lamp and the use of a coconut shell bedhead as the artwork in the living room. That delicious rug was originally designed for the bedroom, but it was so outstanding that we felt it needed to be seen and it worked so well with the mustard cushions and throws – it just bought the place to life.

The main bedroom is stunning. We love white linen and use it wherever we can, especially when it is 100% French flax linen (you will see this in many of our bedroom designs) and we partnered that with a grey linen bedhead and just a couple of decorative cushions to give that luxe hotel vibe. Our client also requested lots of additional storage so we made the bedsides as wide as possible and added a tall boy in a completely different wood tone, but one that is reminiscent of tones in the living and dining areas. All the artwork and books were selected solely with our clients in mind. We asked lots of questions about favorite travel spots, iconic people, and heroes.

When we started on their teenage son’s room he had a lot of input into colour choices and we were able to bring in his love of fishing and boxing with just a few pieces.

The final room was the balcony which is huge in comparison to the apartment. This again, wasn’t in the original brief and our client had purchased the furniture, so we just styled it up with great accessories, artwork, lighting, an outdoor kitchen, and a green wall.

The project was a stunning success and to this day, she walks in and falls more and more in love which is all we want for our clients.
