Turpentine hardwood floor ideas

Hello my trusty Houzz Brains Trust! We are in the process of moving into a new home. It was built in 1950 and the floor boards at the back of the house are turpentine hardwood in a quite deep reddish colour. The rest of the house is carpet (which I loathe).

So my question to you is this. Apparently to match these, new turpentine hardwood floor boards in the rest of the house are going to cost an arm and a leg and maybe one of my kidneys.

What is your view on or experience with, engineered hardwood floors, are they significantly cheaper, or is there another species of wood you can suggest that we could use.

I must also say we would like to stain these floorboards darker, so I am open to using another species of wood and just making sure they all eventually match as closely as possible. I am also open to any radical ideas you may have. Hit me with it and thank you in advance.
