Hi Dreamer, yes i understand that, but for a smaller block where houses are almost near each other except for the 2 m gap in between (1 meter on their side and 1 meter on our side), still would you suggest to have eaves? Also how about roofing is Concrete tiles good or is Colorbond roofing good. if Concrete tiles, should we have sarking?

keep the eaves for all the excellent reasons already mentioned and removing eaves won't give you any more space inside or stop winter sun coming inside

Not having eaves started as a cost saving measure by volume builders. It’s really only projects homes that don’t have them as they are a desirable feature. But you need to decide what is suitable for your build and block.

Sarking is mandatory in Australia in certain conditions. You may not have a choice.

the block is 14 meters of frontage and 0 or 1 on one side. so when we have the garage on the one side with 0 and have the building with width of 12.7, we may only have 1 meter on the garage side and 1.3 on the other side. hence having a 450 meter eave throughout especially on the sides, would it block sunlight and if we want to grow some plants, on the side would it good to have eaves?

You also need to consider the orientation of the block. Google passive design and you’ll find the government website on house orientation. Growing plants will mainly dependent on where the sun is coming from. It’s not just an eave question.

Where are you building?

Eaves are useful on the north side because the sun is lower in winter and higher overhead in summer. The effect depends on how close to the equator you are. In winter the sun shines in the windows. In summer the sun is blocked by the eaves.

Eaves don't make a significant difference for the other sides of the house for sunlight. They are still useful for the other reasons Dreamer listed.

The sun sets in the west so you will get afternoon sun in the west facing windows whether you have eaves or not. That can be a nice thing in winter. It is a problem in summer. As west is to the side on your block you might get sufficient shade from the house next door. If you do not, eaves alone will not be enough in summer.

On the southern side double glazing might be more important. In my experience south facing windows are always the worst for condensation in winter.

But specific advice depends on where you are building and what your climate is.

It is increasingly important to build for efficiency and comfort in whatever climate you live in.

Eaves, windows, orientation, are all ways in which you can make the house cheaper and easier to heat and cool. What works best depends on where you are.

In some locations homes need a lot of heating but summer is mild. In some locations homes need cooling but almost never need heating. Some locations have both very hot summers and very cold winters.

So hot summers and cold winters. You need to plan for both.

I'd keep the eaves all around.

I'd pay attention to the western orientation because eaves will not necessarily be the whole answer there.

You can always find plants suitable for different levels of light. The challenge will be finding plants that grow so narrow.
