When we enquired about engineered timber to go on a concrete slab we were told they'd have to check it and if it wasn't level enough they might have to put a thin layer over it, I can't remember what they called it. So I'm wondering if your builder and floor person have said anything about what they'd do to the tiles to ensure a smooth flat surface suitable to lay the timber floor over? Another thing is how would laying more flooring over existing flooring affect the floor level where you transition betqween the new floor and tiled areas like bathroom or laundry?

Thanks macyjean. One flooring person said the tiles were in good shape to have the engineered floor layered over it. And the bathroom and laundry haven't been done yet, so that won't be a problem. But thank you for sharing your experience with needing another surface before the timber was laid.

I hope you get a more informed answer from someone but one thing I pictured was if one tile is flat and then there is the grout line and then there is another tile which is very slightly tilted in comparison to the first tile and then there's another grout line and another tile and so on, it might be imperceptible enough when walking over it but make a difference when laying long boards over it? Though the boards have an underlay which you'd think smooths out any tiny unevenness? Maybe the person we spoke to was just being super fussy. or maybe ensuring there's no problems halfway through the job? I'm not sure.

At least you don't have the added dilemma of trying to make it work with the wet areas.

That’s a good point. We are getting a concrete floor guy to take a look on Friday. Out of interest what timber did you go with?

Carpet. The timeframe to have the slab checked and possibly levelled before the actual installation could start didn't suit us.

That prompted a recollection, I think what they were talking about was 'levelling compound'.

You will not be sorry, Linda. I have recently bought a home with engineered timber and absolutely love it. So easy to care for, always looks good and kind underfoot. Looks great too:-)

@Robin, would you mind sharing what brand you go with engineered flooring? And the thickness of the real veneer layer? And installation cost?

Some suggestions are best followed. I bought a 1950's wooden weatherboard I was lucky I only had a few borers but my house in Port Melbourne was riddled with termites. Always have your floors inspected before you put in any new tiles or carpets or whatever. Don't want to have to pay twice for any mistakes builders can't be bothered with....

I have Godfrey Hirst engineering timber flooring and dont like. If you scratch it or have any issues it is hard to fix. it is also cold. Also you need to make sure your concrete is level.
