The brief from these clients was to transform their main lounge room from a kids playroom, into a comfortable space for adults now that the girls were a little older. They were prepared to invest money in furniture, art and accessories that would transform the space but were not in a position to incur costly changes to flooring or walls.

Most importantly the clients wanted a place where they could relax with a cup of tea, chat when friends were over and watch movies with the kids on lazy afternoons. They wanted to soak in the view of the lush green outdoors and enjoy the calm and relaxed space they had moved out of the city for.

The flooring, which couldn't be changed, was challenging as the previous owners as tiles had been placed over the floorboards in some areas which limited the functionality and configurations options available for the room.

Scaled drawings were prepared for the clients so they could see how they could best use the space and the concept designs created reflected a modern, adult space that complimented the relaxed lifestyle the family was seeking.

The couple’s style reflected both scandi and coastal preferences, so the concept incorporated a warm, neutral colour palette as a calm backdrop for the pops of green and burnt orange they chose. Simple but good quality oak furniture was also a key component of the design as they were at the point in their lives where they were prepared to invest in furniture that would last.

As for the floorplan, the existing space was re-designed to create two clearly defined and practical spaces. The first was a space to enjoy the view with a cup of tea or a good book, with the second being a tv area with a chaise lounge and occasional chair to double as a family tv space or conversational area with friends. The layout accentuated the wooden floorboards and took the focus off the tiles, incorporating these to feel like a walkway within the space.

The space has now been completed and the clients are over the moon with the final results.
