A dramatic bathroom transformation
This peach 1980s bathroom was in desperate need of an update. Everything had to go, but re-thinking the layout meant taking a brave decision to knock down a few walls.
The existing space threw up several challenges which face many renovation projects:
- How to create the feeling of more space when you are limited with the existing location of the plumbing?
- Do you pinch more space by making the walk-in robe smaller?
- How do you create the ideal feature wall or focal point when you have two doors to the bathroom?
- Does the focal point become the view or the vanity, or the bath?
As the family had all grown up and left the nest, the room was mainly used as a guest suite. Being a second bathroom, for resale, we had to keep the two-way access for the three bedrooms attached. The major decision was to turn the shower into a walk-in shower stall with no screen. The feature wall became the stone tile behind the vanity, which had a touch of sparkle, and ran the full length of the wall, into the new shower.

The next decision was to place the toilet cistern in a new wall for a stylish look. To create the wall for the walk-in shower we had to lose some width in the entry to the bathroom.
A great design tip for narrow spaces is to trick the eye by adding a large mirror which then reflects the view and visually opens up the space.

Another dilemma was the choice of window covering to enhance the view without the choice of colour or product distracting from the view. The usual safe choice of white, would be clean and fresh but would then dominate the room, as well as the stylish look of shutters would also become the feature, so we decided to choose a beautiful bronze metallic blind, which gives off a bold moody feel to the room but does not interfere with the view. Selecting dark colours can be a daunting step, but the result is amazing.

Overall, the design resulted in a practical and stylish renovated bathroom with a dash of drama.

Comments (0)Hey Guys I'm a newbie I've decided to slowly paint and change a few things in my Nan's house in hope's of transforming it and making it less of an eye sore Never done anything like this before , but love a great transformation. And thought this be an awesome project for myself. I am starting off with the bathroom, I will attach some photos of it currently, I was looking at warm greys for the walls , ceiling possibly white-ish but need more suggestions on colours , as I completely stuck as this anything would be helpful will probably paint first, then do flooring , then vanity?? Comments (0)I love the look of Tand G as the real thing or the 'James Hardie' NZ groove panels..........but also want my ensuite to look opulent. I am not having tiling anywhere in this room, which would be the easiest solution. Hence my dilemma..... I already have chosen the white 'tile look' acrylic walls with a feature 'marble' (narrow) panel in the shower alcove enclosure from the 'Atlantis' range. The alcove covers the complete width of the bathroom so is a feature in itself. I wanted to bring the 'marble 'feature' into the room if I could to enhance the opulence. The marbling is minimal veining on a white background so not too dramatic a feature. The obvious area is to use a matching 'marble' vanity top and/or a splash back (especially if have a china vanity top, which is the more likely due to cost). Where should the splashback end at the sides? I thought about taking the 'marble' splashback above the mirror to the ceiling thus creating a similar panel feature to that in the shower albeit wider but don't know how much wider it should be than the vanity. Also What then to do on the rest of the wall(s)? Just painted gib? If I used T& G or groove panelling I would want it to reach the ceiling. So do I put T&G on on all walls? The vanity wall has approx 1000mm 'strips' of full wall either side and the strips below the vanity and above mirror if only a splashback is incorporated. The opposite wall is almost taken up by window, radiator below, btw toilet and towel rail, leaving little wall to 'feature' and then the remaining wall is narrow (only 1100 left after door). These remaining walls could just be left as painted gib of course as really cannot afford to take the 'marble' panelling anywhere else in the room nor think where else it would feature best. 'Marble' Flooring is a possibility but it would need to be vinyl not porcelain tiles. Having written all this down I think I have talked myself out of T&G on any of the walls as the narrow room would become too busy and bitty but am still interested in what others think....See MoreThe Bathroom Project of our Dreams - Before & After
