Mediterranean courtyard dilemma - your advice appreciated!

We have a Medertaranian style house, which is very unusual for where we live so have little to guide us in terms of renovation. We are in the process of redoing the courtyard, it will have a paved area for a table, an 'outdoor' kitchen with BBQ and pizza oven, and then a small paved area in front of a spa pool. On the boundary, there is a large walnut tree in one corner and a yellow flowering tree in another. One option is to have the courtyard at the same level as the covered veranda, but I am keen to have it a few inches lower to create a feeling of it being a separate space (and avoid water flowing onto the covered area when it rains - we will have drainage but it will be easily blocked by the tiny leaves from the tree). What do you think will look/function the best? Thanks for your help!
