Building permit for door to deck

Hi,

We are wanting to update our doorway to our deck to try and connect the outdoor and indoor a bit more and make it more modern (on a budget).

A couple of questions:

- if we were to extend the opening or make another one on the other side of the wall, do we need a building permit?

- if we keep the opening just as is, is there an easy, cheapish way to change door to make it more modern and make it feel more open?

(we are updating floors and curtains and also looking at options for a servery window connecting kitchen)

Leave the sliding door as is. It might be problematic with the beam to do one big door, because the beam would be resting on that wall and is structural. If you want another separate door, then contact YOUR council and get advise from their planning approval department. All states and councils are different, you need your council information.

Take down the pelmets that are over window and sliding doors. This may make it look more modern. If you are installing new curtains, then have the curtains start from a rail installed just below cornice. This will add height to the sliding door and window without changing them.

Not yet. We actually have JUST engaged an architect to draw up an older school house we are hoping to purchase and use as an addition onto the left hand side of the house. Obviously if that purchase goes through, we will hire the architect to work on both the connection of the new building to the house as well as the front entryway. Here is the floor plan of the house. The small bedroom (bedroom 4) sits directly behind the lounge. We are also thinking about removing part of the wall there so that you would walk into the home and see directly into the lounge or turn slightly right and enter the kitchen.

I agree with havingfun, thicken the supports and have something growing trailing up them. I didn't even notice there was a pergola until the close up. Right now it blends in too well with the house color, consider painting it a different color. Also agree lighten the front door.

Funny how fashions change. Pelmets were for the rich to hide the Track and stop light and heat seepage.
