Best insulation solution for old weatherboard cottage ?spray on foam

last modified: last year

I just bought a 1930s fibro/weatherboard cottage. The cottage is on stumps with no apparent insultation between the wooden floor and the earth underneath.

This is our first winter and we are freezing! Worried about the cost of heating and cooling.

I have done some reading on spray on foam. I was looking for advice regarding spraying the foam to the underneath of the jarrah floor boards (they are in good condition).

Has anyone done this? Did it improve the internal temperature? Has there been any negatives? ?The effect of insulation below floor boards on the natural movements of wood?

PS The roof has fibroglass insulation batts but unsure of how effective these are/age (Building report with infrared camera showed an internal temp of 19degrees over the living areas but this most definently isnt the current home temperature

I have a 1950s with floorboards. It’s my second of similar age. In both houses the ceiling insulation and good blinds make them totally new houses in terms of comfort. Neither have/had anything under or on top of the floorboards and are comfortable. Have a look at the ceiling and any windows/drafts first.

I also would be checking the wall insulation. Is there any insulation between external timber and fibro sheets and the interior sheeting on the walls?

    Thanks thats very helpful.

I doubt there is any insulation between walls given the age and type of home.

ill have a proper look in the roof space to check the condition of the insulation batts.

We dont want to do a massive overhall renovation of the house as I dont feel it will yield huge return for us. But improved energy efficency/comfort I feel is worth looking into. So thank you both for your thoughts to look into walls and roof first
