Kate, can I suggest you get out the graph paper and scissors, cut out some ‘to scale’ facsimile of your furniture and play around with set out. Once you have an idea, use life size cut outs in the space (we used old removal boxes) and physically check that the layout works. From what I can see, your traffic areas will be 1) front door to stairs and 2) stairs to sliding door. This lends itself to 3 zones, imo. Narrow storage/decorative area along the wall opposite the sliding door, sitting area in the area nearest the car port, and games table / coffee and reading / crafting area on the side without views. We’re all so individual tho. For one family, a day bed might get a lot of use for relaxing and extra guests, but might be useless for a family of surfers who need access to the walls where the boards are racked. Trust your own knowledge of what would suit you and yours, keeping in mind how things might change as kids or oldies mature. Take your time and once you’ve got that sorted, post a specific query, with diagrams / photos if you get stuck, but back yourself first and foremost

Much easier to visualise if you draw in what you have to their size in. If there is a fridge and it's a casual hangout shouldn't there be a small sink bench next to it or is plumbing that too tricky?

Maybe this. The antique sewing machine can double as a hall table. Tv on the wall with no views. Dining suite to look out new window. Access around furniture for pathways through the room and outside. Just depends on the actual size of your furniture.

Dairy_maid there is currently a sink but rarely used and we have elected to remove it to get the bottom step to widen out. But it may come back as a small sink. We have a laundry and bathroom on this ground floor. Plumbed fridge not recommended as the house is not in use enough to maintain it.
