Hi, I went to final inspection for my new built house. I noticed there is a gap underneath the benchtop. Please see attached photo.

Is it normal? The site supervisor said it is. But I doubt it just because it looks like unfinished. Would like to hear your opinion. Thanks

Picture didn’t post. What is the benchtop made of? What State are you in (different States have varying ways of installing stone)?

I am in Victoria. The beachtop is 40mm Caesarstone. Thanks

after watching my daughter and her husband agonize over the way their expensive timber floor has not held up well after 3 years, I would recommend tiles/wood look tiles with under heating. Their beautiful warm expensive floor looks like it always needs a clean and polish, not from neglect, they have cared for it well. One of the boards now has a slight and painful moan when it's stepped on :-( I grew up in a completely wood floor home and although it looked wonderful, my Mother hated it. ....and the mats ! Wood is a lot harder to maintain than tiles ,(no matter what the die hards say) the modern wood finishes are much better than they used to be.... But a piece of wood is rather arty no matter what it's used for and it does demand to be loved and cared for.....and if something goes wrong it's a lot more expensive to fix than sand and cement. Ultimately you have to be happy. BTW underheating tiles is warmer than timber :-)

Hi Vivian, just started following you because I am still in the planning process. It is a mixed owner/builder design and being my first build some of your concerns resonated with me. I'm already finding some problems like original cabinetry chosen is now unavailable and the vanity basin tops also unavailable so now I'm looking at a whole new feature Vanity for the main bathroom. All this and and we haven't even had council plans approved. It's been a long arduous process.

@M a gallomaine, it’s really a long process for building a new house. A lot of uncertainties and changes. For the cabinetry and vanity, it is still too early to confirm in planning stage. For my case, it is in the of fixing stage to get these lock in.
