It depends a bit on the style of the house, but a light roof (like Shale Grey) could work nicely with white weatherboards and black windows. Monument roof would mean the house is harder to keep cool in summer.

never dark roofs..not good for overheating and already becoming dated.. . i have to agree with your husband and there is a great range of new Colorbond Colours that will look great with white cladding ...check out the Colobond websites and order some samples and then check real swatches to make sure that you're happy with your choices

Monument or dark would definitely be against solar passive principles. The lighter roof will still be wonderful, maybe just have monument on the gutters and fascia…

I’m currently doing Surfmist roof, gutters and facia’s with natural white walls and black framed windows. It looks fantastic. I’m using back light fittings to add interest. So many ‘experts’ dissuaded me but so glad I stuck to it as it looks amazing. My house is on the coast but the palette is a little edgier than the us

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I've taken on board the reasons for not going with monument. I'm loving the white idea that siriuskey linked to. But am I brave enough. I have noticed a lot of the white roofs in new estates nearby. I don't like it on coloured or brick houses but white with white looks so sharp with black windows.

It wasn't so long ago that when you flew into a city it was a sea of red roofs which slowly changed to Monument and now changing to lighter roofs. The all white house works in a place like country Bowral and the coast it's ageless and works with all styles. Love the click lock metal roof on the house in Bowral.
