It seems you have plenty of space for foot traffic. I would pull the dining table away from the wall and center it in the room, but turn it round so the length runs with the room and the width is aligned with the glass door.

A nice big rug under the dining set, measure the width of the dining table, add at least 1400mm to allow room for the chairs to be pushed out without coming off the rug.

Paint the room a pale beige to connect with the tile and create a softer look.

Get a new curtain rack (white) make sure it extends out further so your curtains don't block the windows and it frames up the space better.

Can't really see enough to comment on a sofa but I think a couple of occasional chairs around the fire with a second rug would probably be a good solution - depending how many occupants there are too. This way you are breaking the area into 2 x zones, dining room and fireplace area.

Unfortunately we will be replacing the table. As lovely as it is with the dark mango wood and chunky legs, we want to make a new one (rectangular, as aposed to square)

I should have added that we do have a 'formal dining' room and living room on the other side of the kitchen, but when we moved in with new toddler, we didn't want to eat over carpet (it's carpeted) so tthat room has been used as a den. So this area doesn't need to remain with a dining table, now that our child is older I want to return the dining area to where it's intended to be.

We have already painted (from a poopy green colour to a warmer yellowish cream. The tiles are a warm colour with almost apricot colour running through them.

We will be adding more shelves as my partner builds them over time.

I like the idea of changing the curtain rail, and making it longer. I'm thinking perhaps wooden.

(formal dining we will rip up carpet and lay hardwood flooring, that room gets all the afternoon and evening sun)
