Advice suggestions for Kitchen layout
Hi, We have been mulling over the design for our new kitchen for weeks and are hoping for some advice and suggestions. We have a large space in our open-plan living /dining, but it also needs to include a laundry. We would also like a walk-in pantry/breakfast hub mainly for appliances, including a second sink. The first plan incorporated the laundry and pantry behind a wall, which seemed to work; however, when we marked it out, we were concerned that the island was protruding too far into our living area. Our second version would include an area beside the kitchen with laundry and pantry, but these spaces would be very small, and we are concerned they would not be very functional. It would create a more spacious living area, but I'm not sure if we should prioritise this over a more functional space Your views and /or suggestions would be much appreciated.

last yearFirstly, will this be the main dining and living area! Have you considered the noise factor of having the laundry in the living room? My thoughts using the option posted with two separate spaces. Have the laundry an enclosed space as drawn. Open the breakfast area with removing the right hand storage, and have the bottom bench go to the corner. This gives extra room to stand and deletes the troublesome corner storage. My question is? Who will be standing in the small pantry area making their breakfast? If it is just one or two people getting ready in the morning, at different times, fair enough. But if it is a family, how will you all use the breakfast area at the same time? Why can’t you just have a pantry for storage and bench space for appliances? So, I guess, I’m recommending a combination of your two design plans. Separate enclosed laundry and open bench space with pantry cupboard storage. Are the living glass panels fixed or doors. You would have more wall space if you deleted the walk out from kitchen area.

Comments (15)The first thing I require each of my clients to do before even starting the design layout is to choose their appliances. Your kitchen designer will need the manufacturer's specifications to know what size to make the cabinets to accommodate them. Be aware that there is required distances needed around and island, typically 36" up to 48" depending on placements of appliances. This will dictate the size and shape of the island. Clean lines, simplicity, innovative materials like glass countertops, exotic woods or Italian veneer slab doors, flip or lift up doors can add unexpected touches to a modern/ contemporary space. Comments (9)Thanks very much for all your feedback. Just to answer a few queries - the deck is directly outside the main room so the new doors open out onto it. The doors won't be French - they're just the only doors that the 3D planner I'm using had, they'll actually be large stacking doors. I've had another idea too which would be a lot more expensive but offers a completely different approach. Comments (0)Hello everyone =) Only In the early stages of redesigning kitchen (for the first time). I'm doing this on quite a tight budget, so will not be moving plumbing around. Below are the first set of drawings that have received - to which have made a few modifications to and you can see my notes are written all over it. Drawing is pretty close to scale, and have already extended bench on the left to make room for a breakfast bar- so this can't go out any further. I feel that I do have at least 1 or 2 areas of wasted space (see blue note on 2nd image), and am hoping for any ideas/solutions what i could do for this corner, or any other suggestions for that matter would be fantastic. Comments (2)As well as echoing homeprojects advice , a few other things that look a bit 'funny' to me . Firest thing I would say is I'm on a 13" tablet , so everything is small , and I can't read quite a bit , like measurements , but I think I've got a fair idea of the design . TRhe other thing is that it says proposed groundfloor , but there's no stairs I can see , so is there an upstairs , and if so , what is there , and how do you get there ? The garage looks small , if its to scale you won't fit tools or the other 1001 things in there , you'll bash the car doors on each other , no bikes , all problems , nothing much positive . The laundry looks weirdly positioned , on several 'levels' . I'd possibly move/rearrange things so the laundry was about where the pantry is , with an external door . That means though the pantry has to go somewhere , so maybe where the bathroom is , and move the bathroom to where the laundry is ? Another , more logical ( to me anyway ) option would be a long ( or wide -- widthwise behind the kitchen ) pantry , and a long laundry that slots between the 'left' bedroom and the pantry . Basically , split the existing pantry and bathroom down the middles horizontally , whereas now it is vertical . That gets that bathroom closer to the bedrooms ( by moving it to the proposed laundry site ) , but also closer to the hallway for guests . The master with ensuite in the middle is unconventional , not neccessarily bad , but most people would expect the master to be the front bedroom . More an observation than a criticism , but of course , up to you ( and whether you intend to resell ) . And my final observation -- the lounge looks cramped , even the dining is a bit of a compromise . If there is another storey , that may answer that , but its got me confused . Some rooms are quite large and not quite indulgent , but generous -- others are smaller than I'd expect . Just my weird take ....See More- last year

Another suggestion. Turn the island to be facing the pool area and walk out. Have the laundry closed off behind the kitchen area. Very rough, not to scale sketch, but hopefully you get my idea. The laundry with a door on the walkthrough to front lounge area.

This is a reno and extension of a 1950s brick house, with a new upper storey (2 bedrooms/ensuite and small study). We had a tight budget. The staircase is open to the family room. The doorway to the lounge was for flow and light but could be closed in. In an ideal world, we would have extended out the back, moved the pool, or done a knockdown rebuild, But alas, our budget would not allow further structural work, and we had to stick within our current footprint.

This opens up the family room, the laundry could be under the stairs but having a large study space this could be used for laundry and very convenient for upstairs laundry, you could even access it from the bathroom as you would use this plumbing
Having a pool ,have you allowed for wet clothes and toilet access, is the driveway down beside the kitchen, The desk behind the WIP could be for a kitchen study or even a breakfast station..
It will be interesting to see how your family uses the entrance and choice of turn left or right.

Here are some extra images: an old survey, a rough floor plan of the original ground floor, and a photo of our proposed kitchen space. Our house is North-West facing, and the Kitchen is North-East facing. We are a family of 4, including 2 adult students. The garage is accessed only from the outside. The house is double brick, and the new upstairs extension is timber with a Colourbond roof. The pool is at the same level as the house and very close. The land steps up at the back.
