laundry/Mud Room/Exit to patio

Hello everyone,

We have bought a house that we are renovating. Its in the country side and has a big backyard. I need advice on the following:

- The laundry room exits to the backyard, and is not the prettiest thing.

- Since now we are renovating the kitchen, we have two options

1/ Knock down the wall between the kitchen and laundry and make a big linear kitchen that open through a bifold to the verandah. Rezone the laundry room to a european one in the hallway.

2/ Keep the wall and turn the laundry room into a laundry/mudroom. Turn the wall into a window wall, that way when you are in the kitchen or entering the house, you could see the verandah and garden

Which one do you prefer? Any advice. I dont know if I would regret not having a laundry room by option 1 (please not I have plenty of sheds in the backyard)

In option 2, I am a but stressed that its like a tunnel as there is a wall on the right of the table

I am attaching pix

Thanks a lot

How do you live your life? Will a connection to the backyard improve the way you live?

Yes, we spend most of our time outside the garden is beautiful and showing it would enhance the entrance of thehouse

We're on a large suburban block and do a lot of gardening. I'm glad we have a real laundry and if redoing I'd make it a proper laundry/mudroom.

You said you have a lot of sheds though. Do they cater adequately for what you need? I'm thinking if you leave muddy boots, wet umbrellas, whatever items you leave in the 'mudroom', in a shed, you still need to get to the house.

We have created a European laundry in more than 1 house we’ve renovated and I’ve never found it a problem not having the laundry in a separate room. In a smaller home, a more open kitchen and an outlook to the backyard is worth far more than a separate laundry both in enjoyment of your home and for resale. My suggestion would be similar to Kates first option but I would remove the wall completely between the laundry and kitchen and have the laundry behind cupboard doors, then add an island bench in the kitchen that you can also use for folding clothes.
