We’re renovating a 1930’s California Bungalow in Western Australia. The formal lounge has become a bit of a junk room so it’s due a refresh. A feature of the house is the original jarrah dar wood floors and picture rail. I’d love to paint it a bolder colour but not sure what colours go with the jarrah. Would also like to see the fireplace pop a bit more. Any ideas !!!
Gorgeous, gorgeous floors, and that ceiling with those cornices!! Just beautiful. I really like dreamer’s suggestion, that is a great colour combo, dreamer. Navy might also work, or olive green, maybe turquoise, if you’re looking for something a tad less dark and dramatic. Questions to ask yourself: Does the paint I choose have the right undertones? Is the stark contrast between the adjoining room colour going to work, or will it be too jarring? How will the colour change with the light at different times of the day or in different seasons? What furniture and fittings do I have, and will they work with my choice? And most importantly, what do I love? Nothing will replace paint swatches on site for the colour selection, and I can’t recommend highly enough using the colour consultants at your local paint shop (they’re usually relatively inexpensive and often offset the cost against your purchase). Good luck and do post photos of your project to assuage our curiosity 😉
Do you want dark and moody or light and bright. The following photo shows a colour which is a wonderful shade. Or you could use Dulux snowy mountain for all walls and fire place surround, for light and bright, bringing impact with artwork and furnishings. Such as the wonderful accent chair in your photo. Let the wood work be the hero, with just one paint colour for entire space.
The ceiling is stunning, as is the leadlight door and the picture rail. The finish on the door and pelmet don’t match the jarrah and the white on the fireplace clashes with the rest. I would consider painting the fireplace dark like in dreamers photo, although I think it would only be necessary below the mantle. If you painted the rest of the room white, the doors would also look great painted white.
It’s mossy green, Chris? Sorry, sometimes my screen isn’t true to colour so I’m seeing that with a teal / turquoise rug. Looking good though. Love that you’re letting the original features shine, either way
Was originally a light grey but went to a “latte” coffee colour to make it feel warmer. Also decided to remove the TV (we still have one in the main living area) and include a bar cart. It’s worked really well as a space for parents while kids entertain themselves in the garden. Just feel like it needs some more art on the walls.
