Dilemma for couch shape and placement in living room.

Hi, needing to purchase furniture for our new build but really not sure what shape or placement to look for, for our living room. Don't want the back of the sofa to the entry but would prefer not to block the beautiful tall windows. Any suggestions would be welcome please

What are the measurements from bulkhead, not including tv alcove, to the sliding door opposite?

Need to look at the whole dining room too. Can you post plan that includes that space and dimensions. How many seats in each room do you want and what other furniture. Tv, buffet etc?

I agree with you the pillars are unfortunate. The replacement tiles will stand out no matter how close they come to matching so you're better off making sure they are clearly different so the gray one is better. Putting busy mosaic tiles could look nice but will interrupt the flow between rooms which I'm guessing is your problem with the columns in the first place. You will need to create a dextrous solution to tying into the 2x4 wall on the left side but I think it can be done tastefully- maybe beveling it back once you get past he end of that wall.

Mona you have seen exactly the dilemmas I'm facing with this room so I really appreciate your comments. I was focusing on no1, but really 2 and 3 are on my mind too. In terms of getting some continuity between the rooms I was planning on recovering the dining chairs in a fabric to tone with cushions/throws on the white couch, ottomans in a matching tone, and pulling this colour scheme through into cushions in the formal lounge. I love the spring colours at the moment (greens, blues etc) which you can see i'm playing with at the moment but you might be able to see the painting in the formal room which is orange, red and yellow with a blue/purple base. So I'm very keen on colour and so tired of the brown carpet and neutral walls. I was also going to restain the dining table and chairs to a dark mahogany colour, and change the bar stools to something more modern. re: rug closer to sofa, I've done this and it looks off-balance with nothing else in the space. It seems to work better in the middle of the carpet area at the moment. Perhaps thats because I haven't ordered the ottomans yet. I don't want to add a coffee table to this room as prefer Ottoman to put feet up on. I've attached a pic of a rug, do you think something like this would work better? re the wall: yes this is the major for me at the moment. It is a TV room so tv and speakers stay and I wont be adding any custom cabinetry. The idea was to increase the space in this room by removing all of the cabinets and they are now in the adjoining room. The speaker covers have not been painted as I needed to work out what wall covering to apply, and colour etc. so once they are painted the wall colour they will blend in better. The idea of shelving has merit, I'll have to have a think more about that... Any other thoughts you have are appreciated.

I am planning to add scatter cushions and think if I do a pair of larger ones for each end so they go over the arms to creat height at each end, and a couple of smaller ones, I want to bring some colour in too. I do like the idea of a larger side light at either end to, Switching the sofas is going to be my final fix if all else fails!!

There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room. I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed. I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos. The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture. I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Get some real art in there with some color.

So the family room from bulkhead is 3660 to the sliding doors.

Only definite furniture would be dining table to seat 6 in dining space, some form of coffee table and built in TV unit in bulkhead space. No furniture is purchased at this stage, it's a blank canvas.

I would prob have couch backing onto dining with a console table behind the couch. It is not a big living space and entry needs to be maintained around the corner that meets kitchen with sliding doors opening. Some seating will need to be in front of windows since you have the tv on only wall

The space is not big, and you have a walkway out to alfresco. I would place a three seater couch approx 2000mm from bulkhead. Then single lounge chairs either side of lounge. Keeping all furniture at least 800mm from window and sliding door. Because the dining room area is a thoroughfare also, and not that wide or long, I would have a round table.

Importantly you need to purchase appropriate sized furniture for the space. Set outs similar to these photos, with appropriate sized furniture would also work. Unfortunately, if you want furniture, it has to be placed in the front of windows. Not against the window, about 800mm away.

Sorry, just to clarify (because I knew the layout in my head, but didn’t explain) this is how I would place furniture in your room with a corner sofa.

to make the room feel as spacious as possible, considering entry points, windows and flow through really you only have room for one appropriately scaled/sized couch positioned in the middle of the space facing the TV. A a rule work to min. 1m clearance around all furniture, a bit more for seating to a table, to comfortably move around it. Whilst you could push a lounge hard to the window with either a corner or chaise lounge or separate chair it will feel like you've crammed the room full of furniture. So best you balance the longest couch centralised to the TV recess depending upon dining table shape/scale, which probably will work best being a round table as per @dreamer has suggested. You could possibly have a feature chair backing onto the window if it was a light/swivel base so you look through it more as opposed to a bulkier design
