Moving a weatherboard house

Not this house - but similar age & style. Weatherboard, raised up, stump foundations, brick & stone front porch, brick chimney. Separate laundry under the roofline.
Rejoin, re-wire, re-roof, re-plumb. Keep the character but reno kitchen & bathroom to be workable + lose the fireplace & chimney. Mad? Bad? Crazy? Or achievable way to have a house in a country town or countryside?

With the help of true professionals in the moving house industry , good tradespeople, and a realistic budget. Yes, if your finances can cover the cost, a good recycling alternative.

All depends on lots of factors. My husbands grandparents house was renovated but the house next door owner builder has had to bring the house back to a bare farm and replace everything including all doors and windows. Look under the house and get a building inspection done

Thanks for the replies! My wife suggested we talk to a local real estate agent, so i think that is a good idea... just that Im not sure how helpful they are likely to be if we arent selling yet :) As for saving for our dream house, I dont disagree, however if doing this up nicely over the next ~5 years or so while we live here nets us some extra in the eventual sale, then that of course will help us as well. Interesting thing happened today actually. I got a knock on the door and one of the older neighbours asked if he could take some lemons from the tree. I of course said yes. Anyway he was telling me he had lived in the street for 40 years. I asked him if the house had always looked like this, and he said no that ~30 years ago the old old owner did a massive renovation and pulled off the timber and put up the bricks and gutted the inside of the house. We asked a similar question when we bought our piece of bare land. We were advised that building a simple shape would reduce costs... so we've built a t shape. Single story is almost always cheaper. We have a builder who is happy to let us do a lot of work with him. We also choose to live on site, which saves us a lot in fuel. The kids and I clean up the building site most days. We've been able to separate the rubbish out between actual rubbish and recyclable material. As for cladding, we were going to do a mix of corrugated iron with plywood board and batten. But given some of the additional hassles, I don't think there's much in it cost wise. However, in saying all that, we chose to invest in long term benefits, so our house is exactly what we want and should be cheap to run. We were hoping to build for $1800 /sq m but we're still coming out at about the $2000 mark.

I am having my house painted at the moment. My chosen weatherboard colour was Dulux Mt Aspiring (with Okarito windows and Castlecliff door/accents). When the painters started on the weatherboards I thought the Mt Aspiring was too white - so asked them to change to Double Mt Aspiring. I am now regretting that decision somewhat. They have now painted all four sides and the colour is perfect on 2 sides. The problem is the front looks a lot darker as is is just about always shaded from the tree lined street. My question is - would it be feasible to have just the front repainted in the single mix and leave the other 3 sides as they are? Is this a done thing or not advisable? Appreciate any thoughts.

Many areas have restrictions on how and where you can relocate housing. So check for any permit issues in the area you’re considering. I live in a regional town and have seen several down successfully on the outskirts. Although these were down before the cost of trades skyrocketed. One clever thing I saw a family do was to set the two halves apart and build in the middle giving a large open plan middle.
