replacing flooring

Our house is on stumps and is next to a forest and hence cold.
Currently we have carpets and are planning to remove it. The original floor under the carpet is wood and one tradesman is suggesting as it is good wood we polish and fill the gaps and it is good to go.
The other tradesman saying this Would this make the house colder and we need to lay another wooden flooring on top?
I am confused. Seeking your advice.

Hi Ranj. If coldness is an issue and you have access under the floor you can add insulation there. That was required for my extension, but rest of my house has no floor insulation and I am not sure if we loose more heat there or through the single pane glass windows

I believe the reason the tiles work well with the cabinetry is because the tile is lite in color and flat, its not rustic unlike most terracotta. The expensive cabinets work fine with the floors because of the smooth finish. The floor here is the focal point of this room. The Interior Designer or whoever did this room, did a very nice job, keeping it very simple.

@kmkane... The "old thread" comments, at least from ME... aren't for any other reason than letting some contributors know, that the advice they might believe they are giving, may be moot. I know that when I 1st became involved on Houzz, I was glad when someone indicated that I may be addressing a question which had probably been answered months (if not years) ago. Get the professional sander guys in to repair the living areas and kitchen but don't go too dark with the stain as it will kill the lovely grain in the matai. I'm thinking a couple of tones richer than the timber knots showing in your photo, definitely no yellow tone at all. In NZ stepping on to carpet especially in a kiwi winter is so much nicer than a cold floor board shock!!! A nice area rug for the lounge and you're done.

What was your original reason for removing the carpets? Were you wanting to polish the floors or put in new carpet? If you were wanting to install new carpet, then lay another subfloor over existing wood and lay the new carpets. If you were wanting to polish floors, then install some form of insulating barrier under the floor. Also check if windows are double glazed or single panel glass. Double glazing is better. Check around door frames for cold air getting in through gaps. Do windows have lots of sunlight in winter or shaded? There could be lots of reasons why your home is cold.
