Modern Outdoor Living with Character and Charm
The brief was to modernise the home's exterior and gardens within a reasonable budget, with the owners planning to enjoy the renovation for a few years before selling. The focus was on creating functional outdoor spaces at the front and rear that were low maintenance, provided privacy, and made better use of the available space. Retaining sentimental features like the existing lemon tree was important, along with considering parking and driveway access in the rear garden.
The transformation is most noticeable in the front garden, where new paving and stepwork in one of my favourite stones brought instant character, beautifully enhanced with lighting at night. The tessellated tiles on the porch replaced a painted red concrete slab, adding sophistication while suiting both the house and the neighbourhood. Small details like a boulder seating area paired with a sentimental garden ornament make the space personal and welcoming.

The rear garden was reimagined to balance practicality and beauty. Removing an eyesore shed opened up the space, making room for storage, parking, and built in external cupboards and a workbench, all while keeping the area inviting. With thoughtful planting that mixes succulents and exotics, and privacy considered for both the clients and their tenant in the granny flat, the result feels lush yet functional. Neighbours, passersby, and even an architect next door have complimented the transformation, proving that thoughtful design doesn’t have to be overcomplicated or costly.
