Kitchen island pendant options

Hi all, we are finishing up our kitchen renovation. new fridge still needs to be intalled but i dont know what pendant light/s to get dor the kitchen bench? i dont know if black would be too modern/matchy - also thought about wood? however i feel like a brass or metal will be a nice contrast … what do you think will work best for our space?

I think a black bar pendant similar to the image below is what we are thinking of but will see. i feel like the barstools are too harsh and will ultimately be replaced with a wooden tractor stool. Also, regarding gas cooktop - we are big cooks and an electric cooktop just doesn’t do it for us. Will send updatea once i have properly ”styled” bench tops ect…. still in reno phase.

Too many colours and finishes starts to look too busy and disjointed. You already have white cabinets, wood grain cabinets and black bar stools. I'd probably try and find something that has both black and natural colour (like wood tone) in it - don't get brass as there is nothing to link it up with - it looks like your tap is stainless steel - if that was brass you could have got away with brass pendants.

I agree don’t add too many colours or finishes, love the stark minimalist pendants, feature down lights or a fabulous linear pendant. Keeping it simple and beautiful it will always look stunning.

I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested.

The first thing I require each of my clients to do before even starting the design layout is to choose their appliances. Your kitchen designer will need the manufacturer's specifications to know what size to make the cabinets to accommodate them. Be aware that there is required distances needed around and island, typically 36" up to 48" depending on placements of appliances. This will dictate the size and shape of the island. Clean lines, simplicity, innovative materials like glass countertops, exotic woods or Italian veneer slab doors, flip or lift up doors can add unexpected touches to a modern/ contemporary space. The number you need for adequate lighting is dependant on the light fitting, its brightness and the angle the light will cover. The physical size of the fittings will also affect the number that looks best. Two very small fittings may give adequate light but look lost, while three larger ones could seem crowded. You may even find some very small fittings that work well as a group of six. Take into account the width of the surface as well as the length so you can ensure it is all well lit. You may be able to change the brightness of the lamp in the fittings to give a good work light in the number of fittings that look best. Avoid creating strong bright/dark contrast areas on a work surface. More overlapping less-bright light is better than few brighter ones that leave dark patches between them. Also consider whether there are other elements in the space that the group of light fittings could relate to, whether window mullions, cupboard doors, seating etc. If something else is creating a strong rhythm, decide whether you want to echo, or offset that or have the lighting as a background element that doesn't have a strong relationship to it.

Agree with dreamer, I think your stools are overpowering your beautiful kitchen, something a little less heavy would look much nicer and balance the kitchen beautifully.

Regarding your comments dreamer - great to hear your opinion. For us, this layout was the easiest and most cost effective solution for us that has come up really well. While the kitchen might appear small in the images, it is indeed a very big kitchen that we are very happy with. Oven is in a safe and functional location for us - and works for our family.

Are you wanting to replace the downlights with pendants over the breakfast bar?

Visually I like some of the ideas but I'm thinking if the lighting you have works is it worth to change it? You'll have holes to patch, you have ducting to work around for placement of the new lighting, and you'll have fittings to always dust. Personally I like functional areas to be as streamlined and low maintenance as possible.

The kitchen looks lovely, though I'm surprised to see a gas cooktop in such a recent renovation.

Love that pendant, it will look fabulous, I put in a gas cooktop as well, I just love cooking with gas too. Beautiful kitchen

I love wooden tractor stools. Have them in oak. Many retailers James Lane, Black Mango etc have specials at the moment. Mine are from James Lane, good quality but I can not recommend the lm based delivery and customer service. If you can get to a store then consider them.

I’m also leaning toward the direction Julie Herbert suggested — a black linear pendant would look great here. However, I would choose a slightly more refined and sculptural version than the one shown, so it adds contrast without feeling too heavy above the island. I recently featured several elegant linear pendants in this video, including black options that could work beautifully in this kitchen.
