Garden design assistance
Hi all - have a section of my garden which is a circus of plants and feels incohesive. There’s yucca, giant birds of paradise hidden away at the back, agapanthus, liriope.
Any idea on how I can improve on this? Or would it be better to start fresh by digging everything out ?
There is a window behind it all so want to provide some form of screening/ privacy
Was thinking I remove the red plant and pare back the existing yucca and other plants I can’t name. Maybe Xanadu + frangipani to mirror the other side ? Would that work ?

Comments (4)Not sure where you're located, but a gravel driveway may help to soften the house versus asphalt or concrete. Soften up the area with grasses. I would definitely tier the plan heights so they're taller against the house and gradually get lower. It would help to bring the house to human scale and not appear towering above. Comments (18)squeakerd - it is really hard to get a perspective on the whole area but if this is part of a much larger area then I feel you need to first decide just what you want as the end result. Do you just want your entire area to be one open plan or do you want to break it down into visually defined areas within the open plan. As you have the area now, I don't feel any cohesiveness between your table and the sideboard, I think I would move the sideboard to the end wall, it looks more like it would belong there, even just by the shape of the room. Definitely a larger rug will define the space better - just be careful of any trip hazard with the door nearby - but before you decide on the rug, consider window dressings and whether you want things plain or introduce some bold patterns and what colours look best in the area. Artwork can go where your sideboard is now, but again think colours and impact of design on the whole area. It is all very well to build a room around one piece, but you need to look at the impact that piece will have on other items and what limitations it could cause. I would suggest you set aside some serious time to look through photos on Houzz, especially if you can find areas similar to yours, till you find what appeals to you, put the photos into your ideas book and use that to build your room. What you are planning sounds great, making a feature of the yukka and adding liriope and dark pebbles will compliment the architecture of the house, the murraya hedge will add the softness, sometimes less is more to give a striking effect.

This yukka is underplanted with Xanadu, fabulous plant that will fill out , glossy green leaves,, very lush and is more in keeping with the yukka. You said you might like to mirror your other garden bed, do you have photos.

The Xanadu doesn’t look bad at all. Interestingly the other garden also holds Xanadu under the frangipani so defintely worth considering. Would dwarf liriope or causarina as ground cover complement these Xanadu and yukka the most? Happy to consider others too
