Kitchen re-design advice please
Hi Everyone, would love some advice on options for kitchen remodel (how it looks now pic below).
Some dot point ideas I have:
- no breakfast bar & run kitchen a little further along the long wall (pantry at that end)
- shorten wall where current fridge/pantry are so kitchen runs in straight line (fridge here)
- Island bench runnning length ways
- There is a third family/lounge room on another level so we would only need to have a small sofa in the family room
- I like the idea of not having a large dining table, maybe a small table near the family room window & having the island bench as a focal point in the kitchen with seating
- Would cabinetry along the dining wall look out of place (see inspo pic below)
- We do not want to extend into the living/media room
- Home is brick so cannot change windows or sliding dooors

17 days agoHi Debra, I think your idea is a good one. Having the built in cabinetry on dining wall would be wonderful. I have drawn a rough sketch how I think you meant for reconfiguring the space. Only item you will have to check is removal of the existing wall where fridge recess is. This may be load bearing. So it may have to stay. Get a builder or structural engineer to check. Why do you want people sitting at the island? When you have plenty of space for a good sized dining table in the family room area. And it is right next to the kitchen area. Do you have a large dining area somewhere else? I would have stools for occasional conversation, but not for the only seating for a large group.

Comments (40)We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. Comments (4)Your layout for you kitchen looks really good and would fit well with the mixture of black and white cabinetry. With the lament bench top, we would suggest melamine (entry level cabinetry) or acrylic bench top, which can come in high gloss feature or matt. The matt surface would go lovely with your choice of bench top, and acrylic is also a affordable cabinetry material. Below are some examples of how Reno4u has incorporated both black and white cabinetry together, without making it to dominantly dark. We feel as if these examples would be perfect for your layout, and depending on if you want more black cabinetry or white you can go either way. This design above is an example with more black than white, can be made matt or gloss with different handles/splash back and wallpaper. With a u shaped kitchen similar to yours, however from the pictures you provided your style may include different design below the island bench. Comments (0)Hi, I am in struggle street with my kitchen design. I probably have one of the ugliest Kitchens in history so I really want to get this design right. The brief was open up our kitchen, if possible a walk in pantry and a 90cm oven. We are opening up the wall between the dinning room and the lounge which means we have to have a structural post. We didnt want the Island bench right up to the lounge as we dont want to lose lounge space. I have included a few concept pics and plans that I have been given...Im not in love with them but dont HATE them and think a few tweaks may be the difference. My concerns are the drawers by the cooktop, I dont think are large enough for pots etc. The designers have said my walk in pantry is not likely in the space so have done a large pantry and an 'on bench appliance garage'. I am now re considering a smaller oven size if that means a better design. Im ok to have a wall oven or under bench. The colours used are not the colours I will be having. my suggestions keep all the cabinets along the same side with at least 4m island and space for a seating area and extension table.. adding cabinetry along the other side compromises space needed for the sofa and walking space behind island seating ... although maybe some tall shallow storage next to the small dining table
