You will either see tv or piano from front door assuming you want tv?? How many people to sit around focal point - tv or fireplace?

Hi Kate, thanks for the response! There won’t be a TV in the room. Ignore all the furniture in the photos because they will be taken when the previous owner moves out. Ideally seating for at least 4ppl. I was thinking of a buffet (for storage and maybe bar /cocktail for evening drinks) and mirror on the wall facing the front door.

I think you need to make a decision. If you don’t want the piano to be seen from the front door it needs to go where the our couch is. That means the fireplace end becomes the music end, losing the ability to gather around the fireplace as your lounging focus. Is your preference hidden piano or using fireplace for gathering?

With some styling, being able to see the piano and music area may not be unattractive.

The space is one room. So with furniture placement make it into a lounging area to relax and listen to music or read, and the other end a place for instruments, the upright piano, music stands, casual seating, storage for instruments and music. Don’t forget floor rugs, and window coverings. Pianos and instruments don’t like direct sunlight. So make sure they are protected. I would suggest to have the lounge area at the far end that you see when entering home. Then the music part in the front area. From experience, instruments don’t always get packed away. The attached photos just give a “feeling” for designing your room. I would keep the areas separate. As per my rough sketch.

A piano is a wonderful furniture piece. It doesn’t matter if it is the first thing that people see. I have assumed that you have other musical instruments as well. But if you don’t, then place the piano on the wall that you see when entering the home.

And why put a mirror on wall? Add wonderful artwork.

(1) is the glass door near dining table the most frequent use entrance ?

the reason i ask if you have other entrance (near the car pouch) , the the glass entrance space can be shaped to something .

i had zoned the space into 5 area:

(1)+(3) reading/ solitude space

(2) piano

(4) sofa

(5) dining area

Personally , I find challenge in putting the dining area at the right place.

The wall is about 7 meters, which is long, but the opening had taken almost 40% to 50% of the space.

Hence, this wall area for sofa is only about 3.5 meter

Possible solution will be

(1) use 2 or 3 seater sofa at the wall (about 1.8 meter) (leave 80cm walkway)

(2) put the dining table extreme in. leave 80 cm for walkway between wall n sofa

(3) do another 2 single seat sofas if needed

1. Go for an space saving extendable long dining table.

2. Add a rich green throw to the reading lounge to visually carve out a cozy little retreat within the larger space. (tie it with the plant)

3. For the sofa area, for the throw, use the secondary color scheme from the art pieces, so that this space is “tied together”.) For example, if there is brown color in the art piece, u can repeat the brown color scheme at the throw.

4. Paint / decorate the living area with earthy tones that nothing shouts out for attention, but merely for a warm, grounded atmosphere.

5. Keep the overall palette neutral and calm to softly connect the reading, living, and dining zones into one smooth flow.

6. Let the fireplace and timber divider be the focal point — warm, and effortlessly low-maintenance. Consider good quality, minimalist slat muted creamy white divider.

7. To add texture, introduce minimalist soft-fabric framed artwork for a subtle designer touch without adding visual clutter.

8. Add 1 tall architecture plant. place at the strategic location near to glass door

9. Ad diy led strips at the slat divider to create ambiance in the night.

Hi space optimized studio, we probably won’t use the sliding door. The main entry would be the front door via the porch.

Hannah C, do you have other musical instruments or is it just the piano??

I would do something like this set out. Keep the seating furniture away from the walls and windows. Place buffet in the seating area and the piano on the top wall. Circulation pathways are kept as: a clear hallway from entry, and a clear area near sliding door and windows.

We also have my husband’s Yamaha silent guitar too which I guess we could add to this area. It’s usually packed up

So you have plenty of room for the guitar to be placed near the piano. So this room is really a large lounging/relaxing room, more than a music room.

Yes we primarily want a really relaxed living space but I need to put the piano somewhere.

The sliding door was throwing me off and I couldnt decide if I should split the room into 2 areas due to its length (preserving the space by the sliding door because it’s an entry area ) or create one large hybrid area to make best use of the space.
