What Goes Into Creating a Contemporary Custom Home in South Melbourne?

At Arli Homes, we’re currently sharing one of our recently completed custom home projects Project Acacia in South Melbourne.

This project was designed around a simple idea: create a home that feels architectural and refined while remaining practical for everyday living.

With inner-city home sites becoming more considered in how space is used, this project focused heavily on maximising natural light, creating better flow between living zones, and designing spaces that support modern family lifestyles.

Some of the elements we explored throughout this build included:

• Contemporary custom home design
• Open-plan kitchen and living spaces
• Premium finishes and material selection
• Functional layouts with strong indoor-outdoor connection
• Multi-level planning to improve liveability
• Architectural detailing that balances aesthetics and practicality

One of the biggest challenges with custom home design is creating a space that looks beautiful but also works long term for the people living in it. For Project Acacia, the focus was creating flexible spaces that feel connected, comfortable, and timeless.

We’d love to hear from homeowners and people currently planning their build:

What matters most to you when designing a new home in Melbourne?

Natural light? Kitchen layout? Storage? Entertaining spaces? Long-term flexibility?
