U shaped kitchen - both long sides the same length?

We are planning a new kitchen and the only layout that will work in the space is a U shaped kitchen. Fridge and oven on one long side, sink under window on the short middle side, and cooktop and banch space on the other long side. My question.... do both long sides nead to be the same length? The side with the fridge needs to finish at a doorway, but the other side with the bench could potentially extend out further into the room. Would this work or look unbalanced?? Help please.

You can definitely have one side longer. Search for pictures of U shaped kitchens, including on this site, and you will find examples.

The kitchen should be designed to be the most functional way for the space. So if that is one side longer, it doesn’t matter.

I think the first layout is fine. You might want to consider moving the door for the storage room of the master bedroom so that it opens into the hall. That way the kids can use it for overflow storage. Also, that hallway is big enough that I think it could hold a large armour, providing more closet space. (There's no need to sleep in the same room as your clothes, so long as they're not too far off.) Also, don't forget that while the drawing shows kids in double beds, this need not be the case, so there will be more room for furniture (dressers or whatever) in their rooms. Finally, that step to bedroom 4 will not be odd at all. I've seen it in other homes. It looks clumsy in the drawing but it isn't. What you'll see when you come up the stairs is a bedroom door on a slight diagonal. It's only an odd jagged step if you walk like a robot, in straight lines along the wall, which is what your eye is doing on the drawing but you won't do in real life.

Thanks :) All very good points. We thought about having the cabinet doors put in for the fridge but we personally haven't found them to be too practical in the past. Ones we've used haven't seemed to seal so well. We are also planning to upgrade the fridge in the next couple if years. Good thinking about placement of the microwave too. We have a power pack range built into the wall cabinets so unfortunately we can't put the microwave above the cooktop. I like the idea of the appliance cupboard being turned into a corner cupboard, although I'm unsure if that would mean that you then couldn't easily access it from the other side of the bench..? I'm hoping our kids will sit at the breakfast bar and make their own toast etc while keeping out of the kitchen itself.... I also wonder if we should have the wall cabinets all in the same line or if we could drop the usable ones, on either side of the power pack, down further to give us more storage....? And (I promise this is my last dilemma!) does anyone have any ideas on whether to place the 1/4 sink to the left or the right of the main sink? Again it's one of those things that I'm going around in circles about....next to the prep area vs next to the dishwasher.....? ...... Ahhhh decisions, decisions ;-) Thanks again

~$400 including expedited shipping. My GC just had his regular countertop guy do them, which wasn't great.... he had trouble making clean cuts. If I were going to do it again I would have pressed for someone with expertise to cut them. You can see in the image that the facing is not made of the stone peak, because too much was broken during the cutting to make the mitered edge. I'm a little bummed, but mostly pleased with the surface (which is the important part) thus far.

The setting is quite tropical, so a darker scheme with white trims has such a tropical holiday feel. You may consider using a concrete face brick for the lower section. This will be modern, and eliminate the need for painting, while still creating contrast with the upper level. Thank you so much! I've had a plan drawn up and the designer was adamant the sides should be equal but I think I might overule her. It would give us a lot more cupboard and bench space.

Sorry haven’t got formal plans but here’s a sketch. The kitchen designer thinks the bench should stop in line with the fridge. I’d like it to come out as I’ve drawn it. There’ll still be enough room for a dining table and walking space. Very happy for any ideas and feedback

the only concern with differnet lengths would be how that impacts available space for dining table and walking spaces..ask your designer to explain how the dimensions of the cabinets affect the other spaces but we need accurate dimensions to be specific

We thought of blocking in the lounge door and making it a wall so lived with it closed for a few days as a trial and did not like it as it blocked off access to the front of the house too much. Hence my new plan to have uneven sides!!

Def the longer benchtop go with your gut. Symmetry is nice but not at expense of function
