Help needed please with front entrance.
Comments (39)Thanks Orangecamera. It's still a work in progress and mud everywhere Sorry we did look at having the steps' off set' but it didn't seem to go with only three steps and a small area. And about the zen well the cats are doing that for us much to our disappointment (it's still like a litter box to them). We went to the garden supply place still not knowing what kind of stones we were getting. We stood in front of all the bins (there where many). We even looked at mixing some. The grey stones had a bin more the size we wanted but we ended up getting the golden fleck. It was a little smaller, which was a shame, the bigger ones were so mixed in their grading it looked too messy. So this is what we finished up with. It was seagardens that got me thinking away from grey and nwduck mentioning the drainage. So this has really helped. Also everyone seem to think the wooden steps needed to go a lot lower. Next it's figuring out where the large river stones should go...See Moreneed some ideas for planting at bottom of our home
Comments (3)Where is your house? Low maintenance plants depend on the zone. I wouldn't plant in your rock skirt. Ideally you'd put your rock skirt around the house and then planting beds outside of that. The skirt keeps mud and dirt off the house and let's you spray for bugs etc. since your skirt runs right up to the driveway on that side, I think your options for plants would be some large pots or window boxes. I'd paint your foundation the same color as your grout in the brick to help it blend in....See MoreNeed inspiration for newly-bought home – help!!!!!
Comments (11)Yes to all those ideas. I believe your cladding is unpainted concrete bricks (is it called Summerhill Stone?) in that (boring) fawn colour. My house is same but was painted by previous owners. It looks so much more up to date and the surface is lasting very well; no signs of peeling or flaking. So despite needing to maintain a painted surface, I think painting is the way to go. Alternative is a costly plaster job. Then the entrance - yes, wide generous steps onto a wide deck or patio, some vertical or horizontal slatted panels for protection or privacy as needed, clear roofing for protection and to allow light to the rooms. And paint the front door a vivid color to indicate the entrance. Just make this area feel generous! Dependent on the adjacent rooms and which direction the house faces opening up one or more of those windows into sliders or stackers would be great. Plants in big pots are good too, add colour and texture - and you already have some there. Good luck - I love the idea of turning an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan!...See MorePlanting a small vertical slope to stop erosion onto house path
Comments (5)I would consider a small retaining wall perhaps 2-3 planks high this will provide support to the bank but also allow the pathway to remain clear and formal. The ferns seem to be doing well but could do with a tidy up. I would also prune the tree so it allows a bit more light into the section to help prevent dampness, you also want to take it away from the house, without destroying it's natural shape. As ferns seem to naturally want to grow there, you could continue that theme. Perhaps some other shade / cooler temperature type plants with some flowers could be a good addition. I am not sure which plants can tolerate the cold Dunedin winters, so you best contact is your local garden centre. You want plants that are lush all year round. Also have a look at other plants growing in the neighbourhood as that will give you a good idea of what does and doesn't do well in your climate. Good Luck....See MoreIBL Building Co.
