Need help to facelift the front of my home

The front of my home is very boxy with two small windows. How can I make this more attractive? I'd really appreciate any thoughts or ideas. Jenny, Auckland, New Zealand

There are many options for changing the look of your house.

I would replace the windows with larger windows.

You can put in tall windows and keep the same width. This doesn't require any structural changes.

If you widen the windows you will need a structual analysis.

However, if you want to really change the look, you could widen the openings and put in french doors on each side with a new balcony for each, or a balcony across the front.

The balcony can be very shallow 6" or deep enough for a chair. It can be cantelevered.

I would go for a contemporary look.

If you decide to make the changes, I suggest that you hire a local Architect to help you acheive something really nice..........Your house has a lot of potential.

I'd personally pull out the little well thing. It makes me think of dressed-up lawn geese and gnomes. If you have the room and the code ok, plant a tree. A large shade tree would be great near the new deck and would help add some vertical height.

Your picture display looks lovely with your sofa and will look better if you bring it down because it's a bit too high above the sofa ( unless you plan to keep adding to the picture collection below from where your pictures are hung now) and in that case just keep in mind that multiple frames look best when arranged in a diamond, rectangular or square shape and spaced relatively tight, like 1-2 inches apart. A looser grouping can work for a more casual display.

I would remove those bushes completely and replace with something that is low growing, or only grows about a foot high at most. As your entrance is to the side, the bushes are closing off the entrance, making it hard to see from the street. I know there is an opening there, but it still feels closed off and not welcoming.

I think new garage doors with frosted glass like the ones in Lampert Dias' photos would transform the front without having to change the structure of the house.

at the least, paint your front entrance door a color to make it stand out and get larger house numbers , perhaps over the garage door.

I think a pergola would look good over the garage doors. I transformed a very flat building with three garages with a nicely designed woodwork over the doors. I also did the windows too and made the rafters on 45 degree angle

So that looks like a door and there should be a deck over the truck! Instant car port too. It could swing contemporary or relaxed jist by the deck style. New window would really help too.
