I would paint the wardrobe doors and trim the same as your wall colour and add large round wooden door knobs (retro), This would take away from all the doors in the room and make the Barn door the feature that it should be, Barn door colour would need to work within bedroom and the room it opens to cheers

Or following on from scottevie you could trim the 3 wardrobe doors with Pine strips from Bunnings to match the Barn door,all painted the same colour, it could look a bit "Farmyardish" and fun cheers

Hi Kylie, Is this room used as walk through, or is it a room at the end of the day the door can be shut, and messy or not, can be forgotten about?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply!.... Louise, no this isnt a walk through area... i can close the doors and forget about the mess :).... although from a light aspect the doors will stay open most of the time as their is a skylight in the room and it lets a lot more light into an otherwise dark lounge room...

Perhaps it would be better to replace the single pocket door with double full height pocket doors that can be opened to let light through into the dark lounge and closed off at night.

I'd keep the doors, you could paint the same colour as the wall so the room looks less bitsy and it will allow the barn door to be the key feature.

Find some fun door handles (easy to change later if you need to change the room's function) (Zara Home have interesting ones!).

Removing the dark carpet will make a huge difference and make the room feel larger, lighter and brighter, that's exciting!

And I wouldn't feel obliged to put in lots of bright colours - look on Pinterest etc, you can make it feel fun without being lairy and clashing, there's some interesting colour ways out there, I love more 'muddy' brights - e.g. introducing chartreuse, mustard, ochre, saffron yellow in with clearer pastels to make it less gelato and more interesting.

I'd still maintain the industrial / classic feel of the rest of your home. Keep to neutrals and then introduce a couple of fun coloured pieces eg an armchair, coloured Eames mini Eiffel chairs etc. By the time you've put in their toys / book ledge shelves, hung some of their artwork on the walls, there'll be plenty of fun and colour that's easy to change up over time.

I still wonder why the Barn door was put in the room and not on the outer wall?

How about chalkboard doors? (I am a school teacher, lol).
I always wanted to do a chalkboard wall in my kitchen, but husband so anti it because of the potential mess.

Thanks for all the ideas :)... given me more food for thought!!... i like the idea of just adding the colour in accessories and toys... The reason the barn door was hung on the inside is because on the other side of the wall there is a semi inbuilt bookshelf, which was the reason it originally was a hinge door... but due to the amount of space it took up we changed to a sliding barn door....

And just keep the doors white. For the bright and fun touches, perhaps something like the following

hi everyone!...
we have decided to replace the cavity slider with another barn door on the outside wall sliding opposite way to the one inside the room, thought this would help tie the rooms together. we are painting the room a shade of white with white trims, white barn doors and of course the black hardware. i will add bright touches later on with shelving for books and bright armchair etc...

my next decision is the flooring?!... i cant decide, am thinking timber to link with the rest of the house, but dark or light??.. and i am very keen on the parquetry style of cutting.

i have these 2 samples which i really like but not sure which matches the best. i have shared some pix of existing furniture that is in the flow on living area beside the toy room. The carpet here is charcoal, although one day id love to change it to a lighter beige colour.

i feel the lighter colour will reflect more light and brighten the area? but maybe the darker suits the styling better?? we have a lot of dark timber furniture, how many different types of timber are acceptable in the one area!! :)

Also should i continue the herringbone pattern all the way to the edges of the room or run a straight border around the room first?
