Laundry tub size

How deep should a laundry tub be? I thought a 45L tub would be too small but 70L tubs are not as common. My new laundry is along a 3070mm wall which will include stacked washer/dryer, topmount sink, bench space and broom cupboard. I want to be able to soak an oven tray if needed, handwash woollen jumpers etc. My benches are 600mm deep and 920mm high. Any thoughts on a good size tub to install please?

Your oven tray size should determine the size of your laundry tub, so it depends on your oven. Most ovens are 600mm wide and designed for 600mm deep cabinetwork, but the size of the oven tray varies between manufacturers. You can also get wider ovens - I think 900mm is the most commonly available wide oven - there may be wider. So decide on your oven first, measure up your oven tray and find a tub to suit. I don't think you will have much luck finding a tub suitable for an oven tray out of a 900mm oven though - you may need to use your bath for that!

My tub is 45L. You can definitely soak/hand wash any size of clothing/ Doona covers etc. When looking at laundry sinks, there are two types of sinks, the square edge or rounded edge. This makes a big difference on whether you can soak a tray flat on the bottom of sink. I have attached some photos. The square edge sinks are just that, so allow for trays. The round edge sinks will not. I would take an oven tray from your chosen oven, and go to a plumbing shop to see what it will actually fit into. You may have to end up soaking tray on their sides. My oven is 600mm I have a rounded edge trough, and soak trays on sides.

Thanks houssaon and rinqreation! Funny - hubby has the same 2 door hate! It sounds like I'm being outvoted on the shared ensuite idea. :) We've actually been set on both the configurations you suggested, we moved away from yours houssaon because we really wanted to keep a closed off office space (and hubby built the front deck and landing already for the door at the end of the hallway!). And I don't know why we shifted the door on the bedroom back to the same area, I think it was about having easy access to all the kids bedrooms. But maybe we should shift it back as you suggest rinqreation. Joice, the door at the end of the hallway is the front door, the entrance closest to the street, that you would come to first if you were a visitor. Not totally necessary, but we reinstated it before we decided we wanted the entrance up the stairs (middle bottom) which would be under a carport. Thanks for all your input!! It's really helpful to have some unattached opinions. I'm keen to hear from anyone else on the shared ensuite or 2 door hate question! :)

Yes, measurements would help. Thank you aldrea1 for other explanation, though. That helps too. It sounds like you are going into a total gut-job! I love this! Great opportunity for your creativity. Also, it looks like you have a petite sized stove. With total remodel you can upgrade to a standard size range. Is this part of your plan? Are you going to replace any appliances? It would be good for you to keep sink and stove in original locations. It is complicated to move the stove's exhaust fan and the sink's plumbing. Not impossible, but probably $$$$$$$ and a lot of hassle…. So, I would start planning with those items--stove and sink on current walls. Wherever you put your refrigerator, it would be best to be sure side view is hidden. If refrigerator stays in current position, you could make peninsula a little smaller, so wall on the right of kitchen entrance could extend further and hide refrigerator edge----Or, move refrigerator to another location… Not too far from sink and counters, though. That would cause you inconvenience. You want a work triangle with not that many steps in-between. Do you currently have a dishwasher? Or are you planning to add one? Not much creativity in placement of a dishwasher---needs to be near water source and drain.. Are you doing the work yourselves or hiring a contractor?

Hi Nic, I've been stuck with shower-over-baths in a few rentals and they can be slippery death traps! They also get grotty in summer with bare feet, post beach showers etc which limits usage as a bath anyway. If your kids are old enough I'd go for just a nice big shower area or a separate shower with a compact freestanding bath if you can fit one. If your kids are little or the above won't work for you here's some tips to make a shower over bath safer and easy to use: - Pick a bath with an absolutely flat bottom and anti slip texture at the shower end (those suction anti-slip mats are worse than useless). - Position the shower screen so that you can step straight onto the anti slip part. - Make sure the bath edge is low enough for the kids to enter end exit easily. - A hand held shower head that can move up and down would be a nice addition. I understand your need to bathe your little people but I would not change a thing in this bathroom. What I would do is find a bathing station that could be placed in the shower temporarily until your little folks are no longer little, By the way, bath tubs regardless of the lovely ads that show sumptuous bathing areas as components of enormous and well appointed master bedrooms, are passe. A great idea 150 years ago and for the most part the only reasonable and effective solution. Today, bathing in most homes happens very infrequently and adding a tub to your space would be the tail wagging the dog. Keep the nice space you have created and add a temporary bathing solution. You said how deep should they be, it's more about the shape of laundry trough. 70L are usually around 275 high or deep, 45L are usually around 230 high or deep.
