I would like to make this room cozy, inviting and more contemporary. The Italian furniture are family heirlooms and have to stay. We have a very small budget. Please help.
If this photo from your ideabook is the look you are going for, try adding a rug and inexpensive coffee table. To keep budget down, try an indoor outdoor rug you may find on sale at the end of the summer.
The other thing you could change easily would be curtains or other window treatments in a zingy color or pattern. Perhaps there are curtains in another part of the house that could be swapped with these? Try taking them down to get a good look at the blank space possibilities.
How about paint? Something a little bold, in the green family and tie together with throw pillows. Do you have a view? Perhaps the room would not be so blue with the drapes open. I would like a rug with a pattern.
Contemporary style and your furniture and curtains do not like it other. How about a more transitional style? I'd move the cart/table to between the sofa and loveseat and get a nice, transitional lamp there. An area rug (not too contemporary or traditional) and a coffee table will cozy the space up.
Perhaps you could update the accessories on the antique pieces of furniture. Find a lamp, candle holders, vase or other object that accentuates the furniture and draws in interest. Check magazines or HOUZZ for examples and ideas. De-clutter by perhaps hanging some photos on the wall. Allow the antiques to stand out. A coffee table would definitely help pull the room together but try to find something that will harmonize with the heirlooms.
