Shared bedroom between two girls
Hi, I have had to move into a much smaller house, which has meant my 2 younger daughters, aged 9 and 7, now have to share. I am desperately after ideas that will make their room a much nicer (and more spacious) place to be. The room size is 3.6m x 3.3m. The ceilings are very high. I have a built - in, however, the drawers are all full of clothes, and bits and pieces, so I need to maintain storage, have 2 beds, and I need space to put a desk. I have thought of the idea of loft beds, however, matching ones usually cannot be reversed, so I would miss out on storage on one of the units. I am considering the loft beds with desk underneath from Ikea, however, as they are only 2m2, they are nearly 2 m high - just concerned if I have 2 on either side of the walls, it might not look so good. I have also considered ensemble bases with drawers, but still need a place to store books and toys. I don't have a lot to spend, so need to be creative. Please help!

2 double bunks with drawers under and desk between under the window (would you still bee able to open the wardrobe. sleeps 4
1 double bunk with double bottom and single top bed with storage under plus 1 double bunk with desk and storage underneath with one top bed. sleeps 4

Comments (3)At this age you should just ask for favorite colors, and then you pick the complimentary covers. Real privacy demand won't happen until about 11 - 13, so right now just concentrate on making it beautiful. If it is pretty and functional, they will love it! Buy furniture pairs so when you do split them up they each have basics. Advice about dividing the room generally is good, but you don't want big sister declaring any territory! There is a crown detail you can do over a bed that includes curtains down on either side - can provide privacy when you sit up in your own bed - consider this as they get a little older and won't pull it down while hijinxing. If it is beautiful and the textiles are in a color they love (or two colors that work together, like pink and lavender on a spring green or taupe wall &/or turquoise and spring green on a buttercream yellow wall ) - then they will see that they can also be different people who are harmonious together. At 7, she is old enough to pick a great color, but don't ask the 5 year old - her taste is changing daily - just surprise her with something all her own that works with sister's pick. I like the look when people select soft goods that match except for color and find one great print accent pillow that ties colors together for both beds. Stay with neutrals on furniture - you can paint out different stuff so it is tied together with pale gray paint. Think mostly about function - Add shelves and cubbies that hold baskets for stuff - stuff changes but they always have it. Comments (12)I'd like to suggest that the most important thing here is more about who is using the room. If It's a child's bedroom use lovely children's curtains - there's so much around and any pattern could pick up the wall and floor colours. If a guest room and not used often I'd suggest a beautiful velvet or good quality Linen and forbid the little ones from going in to that room!!!!!! alternately a blind attached at floor level could be raised or lowered so the view is still there but with privacy from waist height perhaps. My wife suggested we talk to a local real estate agent, so i think that is a good idea... just that Im not sure how helpful they are likely to be if we arent selling yet :) As for saving for our dream house, I dont disagree, however if doing this up nicely over the next ~5 years or so while we live here nets us some extra in the eventual sale, then that of course will help us as well. Interesting thing happened today actually. I got a knock on the door and one of the older neighbours asked if he could take some lemons from the tree. I of course said yes. Anyway he was telling me he had lived in the street for 40 years. I asked him if the house had always looked like this, and he said no that ~30 years ago the old old owner did a massive renovation and pulled off the timber and put up the bricks and gutted the inside of the house. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agogreat time of year to ask the children to help sort through all the toys, books and clothes and cull some to donate to charity to make more space (and for new Xmas treasures) AND try rearranging the beds so the pink bed is along the wall under the window and move the blue to be at right angles (so that the tall bed end is less in the way, use the small chest as a bedside table for the pink bed (for the taller child?) big drawers along the wall as you enter the room and find a small table that can fit over the top of the end of the blue bed to create a desk (preferable with castors so it can be pulled in and out to sit comfortably with a small chair) the drawers under the wardrobe will have to be carefully rearranged to have less often needed storage in the "blocked" area and add more plastic storage boxes under the beds and some securely attached wall shelves for books and treasured toys..
the children will be too big for double bunks etc very soon so long term i suggest that you search for an alternate study area in other rooms and invest in adult sized single beds on either side of the window and swop the tall drawers for two shorter drawers across under the windows for storage and shared bedside tables

6 years agoHow about two beds, as pictured below, storage in steps, wardrobe pillar at other end. Build across wall opposite entry door, then still room for large wardrobe. If the head of the bottom bed is under the window then both girls have some natural light into their areas, and not so boxed in feeling. I shared a bunk bed with my sister until she was twenty! No probs
