Houzz TV: A Mid-Century A-Frame Revamped for Creative Living

American ceramics artist and interior designer Desanka Fasiska’s 1963 A-frame kit house seemed to have more working against it than for it. The slanted walls made furniture arrangement awkward and didn’t offer much insulation or a place to run electricity and pipes. But Fasiska pushed forward, embracing the strangeness and creating an open-plan home with enough spunk to live up to the stunning exposed architecture.

What a treat to see the details of that house! I love her artistry and her ability to put together such an integrated and functional space, both inside and out. Truly lovely in every way.

Great light, dramatic structure, beautiful materials, lovely art and styling. Has privacy and freedom. Feels modern yet earthy. It looks like a joy to be both inside or outside. This place is absolutely wonderful. Also, that closet door idea, I must absolutely steal.

Another fine report and take on an A-frame, Mitchell.

In a previous article you reported on an A-frame, I posted how bad it was to reconfigure one and my not so giggles filled expansion adventure when I was doing renos back in California.

This one is thought-out better and in keeping with the spirit, confinement, or better said, the constraints of the design.

Great thinking Ms. Fasiska in keeping true to a very difficult design. Kudos for an excellent interpretation of her thoughts by architect Fonda-Boardi.

A definitive win for all - including the A-frame!

The closet door is beautiful as is the rest of the place. My husband will never see this article. He's wanted an A-Frame since he first saw one. Me, raised in California, am familiar with their challenges.

Love this house and how this young woman has personalized it to fit her lifestyle while still maintaining the best features of an A-frame. I remember renting an A-frame cabin as a child (2 families) for a vacation in the San Bernardino mountains above LA and what fun we though the house was. This is even better.

Nice home but I am a little concerned about the apparent lack of window coverings in the bathroom and bathtub area in what appears to be a highly populated area. Hopefully there are coverings which was not visible on the video.

Love this piece as we have an A-frame style farmhouse. The challenge is slanted ceilings that go to the floor in our 3 bedrooms. I noticed the use of shelving on the slant, which is helpful; but, placing furniture in small rooms with a slanted ceiling is the main difficulty. Any ideas, or places to point me to for furniture design or placement?

As an LA designer, it is rare to find such a refreshing take on simple, well designed living spaces. With all of the McMansions and overly ‘decorated’ residences, good taste just stands out above the rest. It feels like the kind of homes I remember when I first moved to LA from NYC. Except this little gem is less hippy cabin and is more refined, pure, and just enough creative expression without being cluttered. This is a delightful haven, what a great lifestyle this artist has carved out for herself!

One of my favorite all-time houses. I've often wondered what type of addition would work to make an A frame more livable, the corn-crib addition works really well aesthetically. Its angle balances the angle of the main A wall. And the dormer for a nice roomy closet. Her use of natural materials feels earthy without being wood on wood on wood. The garden looks like a great party spot, creative and not fussy. As for the CA drought mentioned by Pamela, I'd think a nice shallow bath would probably use less water than a shower. But I'm surprised CA still allows residential swimming pools. This little one isn't too bad.

That's not an a frame. I live in one. 375 square feet of slant. Sometimes torture, sometimes comically small. once you add a dormer, its a modified a frame. saving grace for me is my front yard..... which is a lake

This is not your grandma's A-frame. It looks like an A-frame on steroids. I think it is fabulous. Kudos to the homeowner.

I live in SoCal and have for many years. This home appears to be located in the hills above the other homes in the area, so she may not need window coverings.
