2. Pleach trees for privacy If you have a formal garden, plant trees that can be pleached in the side areas. Pleaching, sometimes known as hedging on stilts, involves trimming the foliage into a rectangular shape and leaving trunks bare, as shown here. This keeps trees to the height you desire for privacy without blocking out sunlight. It also allows space below for more plants. Most small-leaved trees can be pleached and popular evergreen favourites in Australasia are Ficus species, Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’, Pittosporum and Olearia species, Portuguese laurel (Prunus lusitanica) and olives.
The project utilises a patchwork of materials and finishes tied together by a warm, autumnal colour palette. The chosen materials are tactile and inviting, encompassing an array of finishes which are both rough and smooth, contemporary and vintage. Unexpected touches such as leather and distressed timber lend a lived-in feel to the clean contemporary house, while graphic wallpapers and textural tiling add a glamourous touch. The metal blade wall through the centre of the living space provides both a practical function of separating spaces and a beautiful feature which throws light deep into the plan.

Spotted Gum: Generally, use a natural timber oil without any tint to treat the decking, as the last thing you want to do is take away from that naturally beautiful appearance. If you’re looking to create that wow factor with your new deck, try using wide board (136 x 25mm) spotted gum screwed down using 14 gauge 75mm stainless steel screws – it gives the appearance of a jetty or wharf and looks absolutely stunning.
