A common complaint about hardscaping is that it radiates heat in the summer and makes unshaded lounge areas unbearable to use. An area with grass or artificial turf, like the Oklahoma City lounge space shown here, is a good solution. “Artificial turf has gotten so good recently,” says Reid Schindler of SchindlerDesignCo. “The look and durability has improved. The temperature used to be so hot you couldn’t hang out on it, but the technology has gotten 10 times better in the last 10 years.
These smaller custom designs can be heated to hot tub temperatures or cooled to plunge pool comfort. They can feature powerful swim jets that allow a user to tread water in place to mimic swimming laps. And they can be controlled from a phone app. “They also have in-floor cleaning systems so they are just much less to maintain,” Riddle says.

Obviously, space is at a premium with a small patio. In this modest courtyard, the raised garden bed serves as the back of a built-in bench. This adds room for a generously sized table in the space. Tall trees and slatted trellis walls keep the building walls around the courtyard from feeling oppressive.
Go large scale. You may think you should put only small things on a small patio, but that’s not the case. Look how well this oversized urn creates a focal point on this modest-sized patio. Another clever trick here: The raised bed walls serve as extra seating.

The best way to encourage use of your covered porch or sunroom, even when the weather turns cooler, is to create an easy transition between the space and the home that doesn’t require going outside.

This Urban Naturescape illustrates what can be done in a limited City of Chicago space. The swimming pool measures 9'0" x 31'0" and the hot tub meaures 8'0" x 9'0". The water feature has a 15'6" x 6'0" footprint, and raises 10'0" in the air to provide a beautiful and mellifluous cascase of water. Limestone copings and Natural stone decking along with beautiful stone fascia and wood pergola bring the entire project into focus.
