5 Easy Ways to Draw Nature Into Your Home
Embrace the natural trend and bring earth-inspired colours and botanical motifs into your interior – here's how
Sponsored Content
The hottest interiors right now are inspired by nature – think soothing greens, earthy browns and wallpaper featuring lush, botanical motifs. “Natural palettes create a sense of warmth in your home, and they provide a versatile base to introduce other colours,” says Brooke Calvert, Resene colour consultant. Paint is the quickest and easiest way to bring the outside in; “It offers a relatively inexpensive makeover and can be used on a lot more than just walls,” she says. “Use paint to up-cycle old timber furniture, a concrete floor, to create a custom bedhead or to add magic to smaller pieces like photo frames.”
We spoke to the colour experts at Resene to discover the five nature-drawn palettes and patterns of the moment, and how and where to use them in your home.

1. Indulge in earthy greens
From forest green and olive to sage, green in just about every shade imaginable is having a moment. Greens are calming and grounding – feelings that many of us crave during these challenging times.
When you’re building a green-based palette, one fail-safe technique is to take your cues from the forest and work from the floor up, with the darkest hues at ground level through to the lightest hue at the ceiling.
Or, recreate the look of this serene living room by painting your walls in Resene Waiouru, furniture in Resene Gravel, floor in Resene Spanish White, and accessories in Resene Clover, Resene Dingley and Resene Solitaire.
Choose the right finish: “Natural schemes often lend themselves to a flat or low-sheen finish,” says Calvert. “For walls, try Resene SpaceCote low sheen waterborne enamel or Resene Flat low sheen waterborne enamel.”

2. Embrace oceanic blues
Classic blues never go out of style – they’re sophisticated, serene and the go-to choice for endless decorating styles.
Oceanic, dusty blues and blue-greens that evoke the sea and sky tap into this year’s nature-drawn look, and they work beautifully in rooms where you want to relax and unwind, such as a living room or bedroom.
Create an immersive feel by painting the walls in a dusty blue such as Resene Blue Bayoux and adding tonal shades of the same blue in upholstered furniture and artwork.
Add luxe to the look: For a sophisticated upgrade to a timeless blue scheme, bring in touches of brass or brushed gold in light fixtures, picture frames and furniture detailing.

3. Add richness with brown tones
After years of grey-based decorating schemes, brown is having its moment in the spotlight. Earthy browns, ranging from beige and cinnamon through to chocolate brown, are perfect for creating a cosy and enveloping feel in areas of the home where you spend time with friends and family, such as the living and dining room.
Create a comforting vibe in your living room by painting the walls in Resene Gold Coast, and creating a floor-tile effect with Resene Pendragon and Resene Hairy Heath. Upcycle a trio of nesting tables in tonal shades of Resene Hairy Heath, Resene Pendragon and Resene Gold Coast with legs in Resene Noir.
Or, for the ultimate cocooning vibe, consider lining the walls in a textured brown wallpaper.
You can add energy and dynamism to a brown-based palette by bringing in pops of bright hues, such as coral, rust or mustard, in cushions, rugs and artwork, accompanied by accents of brushed gold or bronze in hardware and furniture detailing.
Emphasise the organic feel of a brown-based palette: Choose furniture and accessories in natural, woven textures, such as sisal rugs, rattan furniture and slubby linen curtains.

4. Keep it natural
It’s little surprise that timber stars in the nature-based trend. And it’s the perfect accompaniment to earthy greens and browns, and botanical-printed wallpaper.
You can highlight the beautiful natural texture and grain of timber pieces, while protecting it and making it easier to clean, with Resene timber stains, such as Resene Aquaclear Natural and Resene Colorwood wood stain.
Or give old timber furniture or a wooden floor that’s seen better days a new lease on life with a gentle wash of colour that allows the natural grain to peep through – try Resene Colorwood Whitewash or Resene Greywash.
Protect your painted floors: Flooring in busy areas such as the hallway and kitchen can get a beating. Maintain its good looks and protect it from wear and tear with Resene Qristal ClearFloor coating.

5. Go bold with botanical prints
Wallpaper is ideal for adding drama and impact to a room – and today’s versions are quicker and easier to hang than ever. All you need is a couple of hours to create a show-stopping feature wall in a bedroom, dining room or study, or anywhere you want to add wow factor.
The latest wallpaper trends favour whimsical botanical prints, oversized florals and nature-inspired murals that depict exotic scenes such as mountaintops, forests and tropical jungles. You’ll find an impressive selection of wallpapers and murals at Resene.
Have fun and get creative: Use wild and whimsical wallpaper in unexpected spots around your home, such as a powder room, behind open kitchen shelving or on the wall of a children’s study nook.
