The final season of Girls is about to hit our screens and, as well as the clever plots and brilliantly quirky characters, many of us will miss the show’s cool, eclectic interiors. As a small tribute, here are some inspiring Big Apple apartments that have a similarly effortless, New York style.
1. Show off raw features
City apartments look great when they make the most of features that are part of the fabric of the building. In this hip Williamsburg bedroom, the exposed brick creates a warm backdrop to the neutral bedlinen. A stylish wall-hanging is a simple way to bring in a bohemian feel.

2. Team turquoise with brown leather
Brown leather sofas are a classic, practical addition in a bohemian apartment. Here, the homeowners have brightened up the dark shade with a perfectly placed turquoise trolley. Add some industrial touches with chrome accessories and graphic prints to keep the look contemporary.

3. Add some rainbow brights
In a small apartment, you’ll probably need to be creative with your space planning. So if you’re going to tuck a desk into a corner alcove, consider making a feature of the area. This yellow desk looks fabulous here, and stands out even more with the addition of contrasting bright colours.

4. Pop in some mid-century touches
There’s no reason why a bohemian apartment can’t be sophisticated, as this slick space illustrates. The modern wall unit is reminiscent of a mid-century sideboard, but the glossy sliding panels add a contemporary edge. Framed photographs, ornaments and plants ensure the space feels warm and full of character.

5. Style up a small bathroom
Even if your apartment’s bathroom is tiny, that doesn’t mean it can’t look good. The owners of this bijou space have been creative with their styling, choosing an interesting sink unit to add a feature to the room. The design is practical too, as it’s open beneath, providing room to store objects and creating a feeling of space.
A small recessed shelf offers extra storage and is tiled to match the floor for cohesion.

6. Work the wood veneer
These veneered kitchen units add a retro feel to this New York apartment. To prevent the space looking too dark, the owners have popped in some duck-egg blue and teal in the form of a statement oven, splashback tiles and beautiful cookware.

7. Pep up your kitchen walls
The painted walls in Girls’ lead character, Hannah’s, kitchen are a central element of the apartment. Hers are a soft blue, while the owner of this eclectic space went for a bright aqua green. Teamed with red artwork and accessories, the shade peps up an otherwise dull cooking zone.

8. Paint your cupboards
If you don’t want to paint the walls, how about adding a coat of colour to your kitchen cabinets instead? The mini cook space here looks bright and bold with turquoise units. Lemon yellow accessories provide a stunning contrast and give the area a zingy feel.

9. Go for a luxe look
This gorgeous loft would be an aspirational choice for the Girls characters. Leather and chrome are warmed up with natural fabrics, wood and green foliage. The exposed brick adds character to the huge space.

10. Boho your bedroom
Create a cosy retreat away from the big city by adding some boho touches to your sleep space. This gorgeous room combines a bright bedspread and red cushions with some beautiful turquoise table lamps. The rest of the space provides a backdrop of warm browns and neutrals.

11. Make your bike a feature
A bicycle is a good investment if you want to make the most of city living, but in an apartment there’s often nowhere to put it. Make a feature of your two wheels with a stylish wall-mounted rack. In this West Village apartment, the bicycle is a work of art.

12. Keep the drinks trolley stocked
No hip New York-style apartment is complete without a space for socialising. The drinks trolley here is the ideal spot to stash a selection of cocktail ingredients, as well as some interesting silver essentials. Keep it tucked away, ready to pull out to a central spot when needed.
