I first saw Frank Gehry’s Mama Cloud lights in Milan several years ago, and thought how perfect they would be for a child’s room. Even though they’re set in the foyer in the photo below, they’d still add that stunning touch of whimsy to the room where your child’s imagination will grow (and go places). We can’t all afford Gehry, but there are other unique lights – designer, bespoke and otherwise – such as these:
Andrea Schumacher Interiors
1. Cloud pendants
Gehry’s Mama Cloud was designed in 2005 for Belux, and has since spawned replicas. The tear-proof multi-refined polyester fleece gives it its fluffy look, while LED bulbs allow you to adjust brightness according to the ‘weather’ you want to have indoors.
Atticus & Milo
2. Balloon light
A more recent designer light, the Balloon light by Brokis is made from hand-blown triplex glass. They come in both ceiling-mounted (see the white and the red, and the cluster pictured below) and wall-mounted (the grey) versions.

3. Birdcage chandelier
The Volières Bird Cage Chandelier by Graham and Green is handmade with birds that have real feathers.

4. Miffy lamp
Who doesn’t know Miffy? Set it on the bedside table (left), on the floor near a cosy reading nook (below), or put an oversized one next to the bed (bottom). Miffy works in a baby girl’s or baby boy’s room just fine.

8. Skateboard
A skater-kid would love this. Thread three loose hanging bulbs through a wheel-less skateboard that’s suspended from the ceiling.
9. Fairy woods
Wrap fairy lights around tree stumps.

10. Nautical lights
Attach a hanging rod for nautical lights to be clipped on – your child can move the bulbs where they need more brightness.

11. Cluster of blooms
Mix up small lamp shades on clustered bulbs to create a bunch of bluebell-type flowers.

Can’t be bothered? Shops like Typo sell alphabet lights like these on the left that you can use to indicate initials, spell a child’s name or the theme of the room.
