I have a sort if passive approach. 2 hedges one of rosemary and the second mock Orange. not only does it cool and keep beasties at bay, it reduces noise from neighbours.

External blinds make a huge difference in summer. Yes the house is darker inside but worth it. Besides just looking at the hot sun out the window makes one feel hot. Growing trees has the same effect while contributing to the environment and providing a calming natural outlook. These blinds can even be fitted with a remote control if needed and the deciduous trees will allow for noticing the changing seasons and allow more sunlight in winter.
