How to Bring Your Child's Wild Ideas to Life
Get inspired by these one-of-a-kind sleep spaces created specifically for kids, and find out how to make a haven for your own half-pints
A child’s bedroom is the one place in the home that they can call their own, so it’s not surprising they like to put their stamp on it and express themselves through the decor. These fabulous spaces should help you get on board with whatever floats your child’s boat (a cardboard one, of course!)
Sprinkle some magic
Fairy lights have such a magical quality, there’s no reason to save them for Christmas. Of course, be sure to keep loose wires out of reach of very young children.
Lighting sets the mood for a room and it’s all too often overlooked. Light and dark can be very emotive for young children, especially for those going into their own room for the first time. A gently glowing multi-coloured lamp or some twinkly fairy lights might just add the comforting glow your children need to help them fall asleep all by themselves.

Segment their stuff
This is the boring and pragmatic bit. Conventional storage has us stashing everything away where we can’t see it, but for children, it’s often helpful for them to be able to see the toy they want to play with, and also know where to put it back. Clear boxes with labels are a great solution for keeping things tidy and visible at the same time. Try to split general categories down into micro-categories, such as ‘cars’ and ‘diggers’ rather then ‘vehicles’, as this will make it easier to find what they want.

Encourage ownership
Children often want to show off their art skills on the walls. Encourage their creativity by providing them with a wall they’re actually allowed to draw on. This will give them greater sense of ownership of their room.
Here, the chalkboard is a conventional black, but magnetic chalkboard paint is available in an array of colours. How about creating a weekly chalk mural together?

Help them decorate
A great way to teach an older child or teenager how to budget and do some DIY in one fell swoop is to let them redecorate their own space. Fix a price limit and help them to investigate different design options and price up materials. Then set aside some time to declutter and prep the room, before launching into the final decorating stage.

Camouflage the mess!
If your child isn’t keen on princess beds, how about an army den instead? Cargo netting is easy to purchase online and simple to hang. Here, the nets are complemented by the jungle mural on the wall.
Loft beds are great if space is tight, as they create an area underneath for storage, or for playing and working.

Get down to their level
Children can spend hours on the floor playing trains, gaming or reading a book. Help them get comfy with some oversized floor cushions that tie in with their chosen theme. The feel of a fabric can be incredibly important, so choose soft fibres and avoid anything itchy. When you’re looking around the shops, do feel the fabric – of course make sure you all have clean hands first.

Do ask your child what they would like and listen to them. Help them think about what they use their room for and how you can put that into action.
