Houzz has partnered with the longest running design competition in Australia – VIVID (Vibrant Visions in Design) – to celebrate the exceptional emerging designers of furniture and lighting making their mark in the architecture and interior design space.
More than 820 Houzzers made their votes count in the 2017 Houzz VIVID Design People’s Choice Award, the new category sponsored by Houzz.
Voters nominated Dylan Falecki as the winner for his entry, the Hooga Chair. The winning design, and the other impressive lighting and furniture design finalists, were on show at the Decor + Design interiors trade show earlier this month at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
As Daniel Dalla Riva of Latitude Group, who curated VIVID, says: “An unprecedented number of entries were received in 2017, from which these finalists were selected. When viewed as a collection of design pieces, we feel that the finalists have produced a body of work with a distinctly Australian aesthetic, and an attention to detail that is on point. From the functional to the experimental, the designs demonstrate the diverse talent and unique personalities of Australia’s emerging designers”.

Designer’s comments: “I designed this chair with a maker’s mindset. Using simple joinery techniques, an uncomplicated and holistic approach to making a comfortable chair was sought. Simple means it is cost-effective to produce and therefore has greater accessibility. ‘Hooga’ is the English pronunciation of the Danish term for comfort, ‘hygge’.”

Full dimming capabilities are available at a touch via the subtle brass button on its spine. Handcrafted, Narvis combines the old with the sleek.”

Designer’s comments: “The goal to create a piece of furniture from a single piece of material motivated the design. Archie is crafted from two pieces of stone tiles with minimal offcuts to reduce waste. The pieces slot together without need for any fixings and can be flat packed for easy transportation.”

Designer’s comments: “The TOM planter, designed and made entirely in South Australia, was the result of a collaboration between Max Hunt and Tom Crosby. The aim was to create a statement piece that tied in with the Hunt aesthetic, and add a multi-functional object that combined storage, table and planter. The wire and oak used throughout the existing Hunt range drove the design and shaped much of the forms.”

The individual pendants are each cut differently to one another, creating an asymmetrical balance with the light being directed out and down from the set thanks to recycled hard-drive disks. Utilising LED bulbs from a standard bayonet fitting, Five Five Six can produce as much or as little light as you need.”
